The second season of the “Yellowstone” prequel “1923” is set to return to Paramount+ this month, featuring the Duttons confronting “harsh winter” conditions that promise to introduce “new challenges and unresolved issues,” as stated in the official plot description.

“1923” explores a pivotal era in the Dutton family’s lineage and serves as the second entry in the “Yellowstone” prequel series, following the limited series “1883,” which aired in 2021.

“As perilous circumstances and adversaries threaten the Dutton legacy, Spencer embarks on a challenging journey back home, racing against time to protect his family in Montana,” the description reveals. “Meanwhile, Alexandra sets out on her own daunting transatlantic voyage to find Spencer and restore their relationship.”

Who are the Dutton family members in ‘1923’?

“1923” introduces a new set of Duttons, led by patriarch Jacob and matriarch Cara, portrayed by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren respectively, as indicated by Paramount+.

Jacob and Cara Dutton are the forebears of the modern-day Yellowstone Dutton ranch owner and patriarch John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner). Jacob is also the brother of James Dutton, the settler depicted by Tim McGraw in “1883.”

Set in the early 1900s, the series tackles challenges such as pandemics, severe drought, and the end of Prohibition, impacting the Dutton family who calls this region home, as outlined in the series synopsis.

First released on December 18, 2022, “1923” became “the most-watched Paramount+ premiere ever in the U.S., drawing a total of 7.4 million viewers across Paramount+ and linearly viewed previews,” as highlighted by the network in a February 2023 press release, which also noted this premiere as “the biggest series debut on cable for 2022.”

Season 1 concluded with numerous unanswered questions. In a December 2022 interview with Deadline, co-creator Taylor Sheridan mentioned that Season 2 is “truly the continuation of the first season,” expressing that he couldn’t foresee the direction the season would take when he began developing it.

“This one differs from ‘1883’, where I had everything planned out in advance,” Sheridan explained to Deadline. “With this one, I was unsure about how it would unfold. It felt like I was embarking on a journey myself.”

He added that he informed the network about the necessity of creating additional episodes to finish the storyline properly.

“I need to divide this into two groups of episodes,” Sheridan recounted telling the network. “An initial set of eight episodes and then a follow-up with another eight episodes in order to conclude this story satisfactorily.”
