BrucePac’s Listeria Recall Involves Meat and Poultry Distributed to 200 Schools, USDA Reports
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released an initial list of schools that received products tied to the BrucePac listeria recall, which affected a total of 11.8 million pounds of meat and poultry.
On October 9, the USDA announced a recall of 9,986,245 pounds of meat and poultry due to potential listeria contamination. This figure increased by an additional 1,779,040 pounds as of Wednesday, resulting in a total recall weight of 11.8 million pounds. It was noted that the additional products mostly went to schools, but no list was provided at that time.
On Thursday evening, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) provided a preliminary list of nearly 200 schools that received the recalled products. Notably, these items were not part of the USDA’s National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.
The agency is also actively updating a comprehensive list of affected products and their labels, which currently spans 348 pages as of Friday.

What types of products have been recalled?
The recall primarily affects prepared foods like sandwiches, wraps, and salads. Additionally, frozen meals that contain chicken, encompassing items such as pasta, burritos, and various family-style meals, are also included.
Meat and poultry products that are ready to eat were made between May 31, 2024, and October 8, 2024. These items were sent out to various establishments and suppliers across the country and then distributed to schools, restaurants, and other institutions.
The USDA continues to revise the list of products affected and recommends visiting fsis.usda.gov/recalls regularly for updates.
What is listeriosis or listeria poisoning?
Listeriosis, also referred to as listeria poisoning, is an infection caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes that is often transmitted through contaminated food. This illness is serious and poses significant risks, particularly for older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, and pregnant people.
Symptoms of listeriosis may take several weeks to become noticeable after consuming contaminated food. Those who fall into higher-risk groups and develop flu-like symptoms within two months of eating such food should promptly seek medical attention and inform their healthcare provider about the contaminated meal, according to guidelines from the USDA.
