Election 2024 live updates: Current status on House races as results are reported
As of Friday morning, Democrats secured 199 House seats while Republicans attained 211, as reported by the Associated Press, with 218 needed for overall control.
WASHINGTON – The battle for control of the House of Representatives is ongoing, with critical U.S. House races still being tallied. Both political parties are vying to take control ahead of 2025, making this a crucial moment for Democrats after Donald Trump captured the presidency and Republicans gained the Senate majority.
To gain dominance over the House, a party requires 218 seats. Although neither Democrats nor Republicans have achieved this number yet, the current counts appear to favor the GOP. Friday morning reports from the Associated Press indicated Democrats had 199 seats while Republicans had 211, with around 24 races remaining undecided.

Implications if Republicans dominate both the White House and Congress
If the Republicans gain control of the House, they will hold a trifecta along with control over the Senate and the White House. This could lead to quick appointments to Trump’s Cabinet and significant shifts in policy. With the Republican majority, they would be able to push forward Trump’s agenda with minimal resistance from the Democrats.
“This landmark election illustrates that a majority of Americans desire secure borders, reduced costs, strength in peace, and a return to sensible governance,” stated House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., on Wednesday, despite the fact that the House result remains unconfirmed and Democrats maintain it is still a competitive race.
