2024 New York City Marathon: Key Information for This Year’s Five-Borough Race
Over 50,000 participants are registered for the TCS New York City Marathon this Sunday, with millions more expected to tune in on television.
U.S. runners are eager to end a 15-year drought without an American winner at this prestigious event since Meb Keflezighi claimed victory in the past.In 2009, the last American man to win the NYC Marathon was crowned. Meanwhile, in 2017, Shalane Flanagan became the last American woman to take home that title. This year, three out of four of last year’s professional winners will be participating again in hopes of retaining their titles. Tamirat Tola, who won in the men’s category, and Hellen Obiri from Kenya, who took first place among women, are both returning. Additionally, Marcel Hug aims for his fourth straight victory in the men’s wheelchair race and seeks his seventh overall win at the NYC Marathon. The defending champion for women’s wheelchair racing is Catherine Debrunner.

Duration of the New York City Marathon
The marathon officially closes at 10 p.m. ET. Any runners finishing after this time won’t be listed as official finishers but will still receive finisher medals.
Viewing the New York City Marathon
Fans can watch the marathon on ESPN2 starting at 8 a.m. ET, and it is also available for streaming through the ESPN App. Additionally, there will be a live Spanish-language broadcast on ESPN3 beginning at 8 a.m. ET.
If you’re in the New York City tri-state area, tune in to WABC-TV, Channel 7 starting at 6:30 a.m. ET for coverage.
From 3 to 5 p.m. ET, ABC will air a live two-hour special showcasing celebrities alongside countless everyday runners.
Fans can support their favorite runners—friends or family—by watching from the grandstands at West 62nd Street and Broadway. Grandstand Seating tickets are available for purchase. Spectators can enjoy most of the route from mile 3 to mile 26 as it is accessible from the sidewalks.

Route for the New York City Marathon
The race begins at the Verrazzano–Narrows Bridge on Staten Island, guiding runners through Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx before culminati ng in Central Park at 67th Street on West Drive.
Defending Champions of the New York City Marathon
The reigning champion from Ethiopia is Tamirat Tola.
Athlete won the men’s professional category with a time of 2:04:58, achieving a new course record in the open division. Meanwhile, Hellen Obiri from Kenya triumphed over Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey and last year’s champion Sharon Lokedi to claim victory in the women’s professional race.
In wheelchair racing, Swiss athletes Marcel Hug and Catherine Debrunner took first place in their respective events. Hug secured his third title in a row, marking his sixth victory at the NYC marathon overall. Debrunner also made headlines by shattering the previous course record by three minutes.

Prize Money for the New York City Marathon
The prize money is the same for both men and women. The top American finishers in each category will earn $25,000. Additionally, a $50,000 bonus will be awarded to the winners of the Open Division and/or Wheelchair Division if they set a new event record.
