Demi Moore Embraces the Viral Buzz of ‘The Substance’ and Its Cultural Impact

Demi Moore Enjoys ‘The Substance’ Memes, Discusses Film’s Pop Culture Influence

Demi Moore is excited about the phenomenon surrounding “The Substance,” reflecting the experiences of a younger Elisabeth Sparkle where the film has gained significant attention.

The “Ghost” actress, who received a nomination for Best Lead Performance at the Gotham Awards on Monday for her role in the body horror film, shared with YSL News her surprise at the film’s cultural impact, especially through the creation of numerous memes on social media.

“One of the greatest surprises has been how it has influenced popular culture—through memes, costumes, and its deep resonance with us as human beings, transcending gender,” she mentioned at the red carpet event.

She added that her approach to the film was free of any expectations, admitting she “had no clue it would have such an impact.”

Moreover, she expressed her wish for viewers to embrace a mindset of “being a bit kinder and gentler” to themselves.

Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle in “The Substance,” where she is a fitness show host who faces dismissal after turning 50 and starts using a serum that creates a youthful version of herself named Sue (played by Margaret Qualley).

Following its release in theaters in September, social media has been overwhelmed with memes using the film’s intriguing concept. Many of these viral posts on X humorously juxtapose individuals of varying ages with similar features and claim they “took the substance.” The film has also inspired a variety of Halloween costumes, with fans emulating Elisabeth, Sue, or even the grotesque transformation that occurs due to the serum’s alarming side effects.

Moore is receiving Oscar consideration for her role and was nominated on Monday at the Gotham Awards, marking the beginning of the Oscar season. She was nominated alongside Mikey Madison for “Anora” and Nicole Kidman for “Babygirl,” with Colman Domingo winning for “Sing Sing.”

However, “The Substance” might face a challenge at the Oscars since the Academy has typically been hesitant to recognize lead performances in the horror genre, having overlooked actors like Toni Collette for “Hereditary” and Lupita Nyong’o for “Us.”

Despite this, the Academy may be more receptive to “The Substance” due to its themes surrounding beauty standards and body positivity. Madison mentioned on the red carpet that it is among her favorite films of the year.

Moore previously expressed to YSL News that she appreciated the film for its approach, stating it wasn’t just focused on showcasing her body or portraying her in stereotypically attractive light, but instead highlighted perceived flaws that one might normally wish to conceal.
