Paramount+ has shared the release date for the second season of “1923,” the prequel to “Yellowstone,” and it’s set to return sooner than fans anticipated.

“1923” follows a new chapter in the Dutton family saga, succeeding the limited series “1883,” which debuted in 2021. The show features Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton and Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton, highlighting their role as the family’s patriarch and matriarch, according to Paramount+.

The narrative is set in the early 1900s, depicting the struggles of the Dutton family during times of pandemics, severe drought, and the end of Prohibition affecting the Mountain West region.

Jacob and Cara Dutton are part of the lineage of John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) from the current-day Yellowstone ranch. Notably, Jacob is the brother of James Dutton, the settler character portrayed by Tim McGraw in “1883.”

“1923,” which made its debut on December 18, 2022, broke records as the most-watched premiere in Paramount+ history, attracting 7.4 million viewers both through the platform and initial linear previews, according to the network’s release in February 2023. It was also highlighted as the largest series premiere on cable for the year 2022.

Indeed, Paramount+ confirmed back in February 2023 that this “record-breaking drama” would return for another season.

The second season of “1923” is slated to premiere on Sunday, February 23, on Paramount+, according to the official announcement made Thursday.

Filming for the show began in Austin, Texas, as reported by NBC Montana in September, before moving to Butte, Montana. Actor Brandon Sklenar, portraying Spencer Dutton, recently teased shooting locations in Butte on his Instagram with photos captioned “Butte is best.”

‘1923’ Season 2 represents ‘truly the second half of the season’

The first season left many questions unanswered, and co-creator Sheridan expressed in a December 2022 interview with Deadline that the second season is “truly the second half of the season,” stating he was unsure of the storyline direction at its beginning.

He remarked that unlike “1883,” where the entire story was pre-planned, this time, he embarked on a discovery process for the narrative.

Sheridan then contacted the network, indicating he needed to “create more episodes to complete this narrative.”

He emphasized that it was necessary to divide the season into two parts: “I require an eight-episode segment followed by another eight episodes to properly conclude this story,” he stated. “I cannot do justice to the story in just two episodes.”

Given Sheridan’s remarks, it appears that Season 2 of “1923” may mark the conclusion of the series.

In Season 2 of “1923,” it has been revealed that “brutal winter conditions” will present “new obstacles and unresolved issues” for the Dutton family, as detailed in the official season synopsis.

As challenges mount and threats to the Dutton legacy arise, Spencer takes on a difficult journey back home, racing against the clock to protect his family in Montana, while Alexandra sets forth on her own perilous trans-Atlantic adventure in search of Spencer to rekindle their relationship.
