Lil Durk Under Investigation for Alleged Financial Ties to 2022 Homicide While Seeking Freedom in Another Legal Battle

Lil Durk linked to a 2022 homicide as he fights for release in another case

Rapper Lil Durk is attempting to secure his release from jail with a $3 million bond. However, prosecutors have revealed new allegations linking him to a 2022 murder while they are prosecuting him for a separate murder-for-hire case in Los Angeles.

As Durk (real name Durk Davontay Banks) prepares for a detention hearing set for Thursday afternoon, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for California’s Central District has filed documents opposing his release.

A document obtained by YSL News sheds light on the FBI’s investigation into the murder of 24-year-old Stephon Mack in Chicago on January 27, 2022. The FBI agent indicated that Durk may have financially supported the murder. Mack had connections to a gang in the Chicago area.

The allegations were first reported by the Chicago Tribune on Thursday, stemming from an affidavit by FBI Special Agent Thomas Callaghan filed in the U.S. District Court for Northern Illinois in April 2023, which was recently made public.

In Callaghan’s 2023 affidavit, it was stated that a reliable confidential informant, who has cooperated with the FBI for over five years, revealed that “Lil Durk was and still is offering money for people to kill those responsible for his brother’s murder.” Durk’s brother, Dontay Banks, Jr. (also known as DThang), was fatally shot outside a Chicago nightclub in June 2021.

While looking into the involvement of suspects Anthony Montgomery-Wilson and Preston Powell in Mack’s murder, the special agent tracked their ties to Durk, who hasn’t been charged in this particular case.

Suspected killers allegedly discussed payment from Lil Durk

Callaghan provided evidence that included a conversation between the two suspects occurring about two weeks after Mack was killed. Through a phone search warrant, the messages revealed a discussion about payment for the murder, mentioning “Durk” and “OTF,” which is believed to refer to Durk’s record label.

Callaghan explained that one message stated, “We waiting he comes up here on the 17th,” signifying that the individual was waiting for Lil Durk to arrive on February 17th to arrange payment for Mack’s murder.

Callaghan also presented photographs showing Durk with Montgomery-Wilson as evidence of their link, along with mentioning that lyrics from Lil Durk’s 2022 track “Ahhh Ha” may relate to Mack’s murder.

YSL News has reached out to Durk’s legal team for comments.

The Chicago investigation into Mack’s death remains ongoing, according to the Tribune.

What are Lil Durk’s legal troubles?

Prosecutors in California cited the details from the 2023 affidavit to argue that the judge overseeing Durk’s Los Angeles case should deny his request for release before trial.

“There are no conditions that can guarantee defendant Banks’ appearance in court or protect the community, especially vital witnesses,” the prosecution’s brief supporting pretrial detention reads.

They added, “The defendant cannot counter the presumption of detention merely by providing a small portion of his wealth through a bond, and therefore must remain detained as he faces a mandatory life sentence in his murder trial.”

Last month, Durk pleaded not guilty to conspiracy, murder-for-hire, and firearms-related charges linked to the August 2022 murder of a victim, reportedly a relative of rapper Quando Rondo. His trial is scheduled to commence in January.

The charges against him include one count of conspiracy, one count of using interstate facilities to commit murder-for-hire resulting in death, and one count of unlawfully possessing and using firearms in a violent crime that caused death.

Sony Music reportedly offered $1 million for Lil Durk’s bond

Additionally, Durk’s legal team filed a request outlining “reasonable conditions” for his release until the trial starts. He has been in jail since being arrested on October 24.

In their memorandum, his lawyers described him as “a devoted husband, father, and son, as well as a globally recognized musician and recording artist.” They proposed bond conditions totaling $2.3 million from two homes in Georgia, one of which belongs to his mother, along with $1 million in cash from Sony Music, home confinement with electronic monitoring, and around-the-clock security services.

Durk is signed under Alamo Records, a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment. YSL News has contacted Alamo for further statements.
