49ers LB De’Vondre Campbell declined to play against Rams, says Kyle Shanahan
The linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers, De’Vondre Campbell, seemingly had his fill of the game against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night.
As per head coach Kyle Shanahan, Campbell declined to go into the game when he was asked to step in for Dre Greenlaw in the third quarter.
“He indicated that he didn’t want to play today,” Shanahan shared after their disappointing 12-6 defeat.
Shanahan noted that this was the first instance in his coaching career where a player has chosen not to participate when called upon.
Television cameras caught Campbell during the fourth quarter, holding his helmet as he left the field and made his way to the locker room.
This season, Campbell has started in 12 games for the 49ers, but on Thursday, he was substituted by Greenlaw, who was returning to action after a torn Achilles he sustained in Super Bowl 58.
When Greenlaw experienced “tightness,” as described by Shanahan, in the second half, Campbell reportedly refused the opportunity to play in his place.
49ers tight end George Kittle remarked, “That is one individual choosing not to support his teammates. It’s a selfish choice. … I’ve never encountered anyone who has done that, and I hope to never see it again.”
When asked if Campbell might be released from the team, Shanahan was uncertain.
“We’ll figure something out. I don’t have an answer at this moment,” Shanahan stated.
Later, he added that “When someone opts out like that, you just move on. There’s no need to dwell on it.”
At 31 years old, Campbell is in his inaugural season with San Francisco, having previously played for the Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, and Green Bay Packers.
Campbell’s unexpected exit added to the frustration of the 49ers’ challenging Week 15 loss.
Currently, San Francisco holds a record of 6-8, with less than a 1% chance of making the playoffs after their defeat to Los Angeles, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. They sit at the bottom of the NFC West.
“This one stings,” remarked quarterback Brock Purdy. “We have numerous players in the locker room who will continue to fight, including me. We want to finish the season properly for this organization, our fans, and each other. We’ll take it one game at a time and see where we land by the end.”
