FAA Extends Flight Restrictions Over Haiti, Prohibiting Most Air Travel Until March

The FAA has expanded flight restrictions for Haiti, prohibiting most flights until March

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced on Wednesday that it will continue to restrict flights for U.S. aircraft in Haitian airspace until March 12.

The Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) prohibits flying below 10,000 feet in specific areas over Haiti. The FAA first imposed these restrictions on November 11 after JetBlue, American Airlines, and Spirit Airlines planes came under gunfire near the Port-au-Prince airport. These restrictions were adjusted on November 20 and were originally set to end on Thursday, December 12.

All three airlines, which are the only U.S. carriers servicing Haiti, have suspended their flights for the time being. While there were no injuries reported on the American or JetBlue flights, one crew member from Spirit Airlines was hurt in the incident.

The U.S. State Department has maintained a level four “Do Not Travel” advisory for Haiti since September 18 due to ongoing civil unrest and gang violence.

“The Port-au-Prince airport can be a center for violent activities. Armed robberies are frequent, and carjackers often target vehicles stuck in traffic, particularly focusing on individual drivers, especially women. Therefore, the U.S. embassy requires its personnel to use official transportation to travel to and from the airport,” the advisory states.
