‘Spy Kids,’ ‘Social Network’ among 25 movies added to National Film Registry: See list
Iconic films such as “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Spy Kids” have earned a permanent spot in the National Film Registry, a prestigious collection that celebrates cinema.
On Tuesday, the National Film Preservation Board revealed that 25 new titles are being added to this esteemed list, bringing the total to 900 films. The selected films span over a hundred years and cover various genres, from the 1885 silent documentary “Annabelle Serpentine Dance” to the 2010 flick about Facebook’s inception, “The Social Network.”
Horror enthusiasts will be excited to see the 1974 classic “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” included, while science fiction fans can celebrate the addition of “Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan.”
Out of over 6,700 films nominated for the honor, only 25 made the final cut. The registry has been dedicated to preserving and celebrating cinematic classics such as “When Harry Met Sally,” “The Lion King,” “Ghostbusters,” and “The Godfather.” According to Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, movies are chosen for their “cultural, historic or aesthetic significance that contributes to the preservation of the nation’s film legacy.”
TV special honoring films to air Dec. 18
A special television program paying tribute to the new additions to the National Film Registry will air on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) on Wednesday, December 18, at 8 p.m. ET.
“The wealth of American film history can be quite immense, leading many to ask: how do you decide to recommend this movie over that one?” said Jacqueline Stewart, Chair of the National Film Preservation Board, in a statement. “This process involves extensive research and discussions, emphasizing the diverse nature of filmmaking.”
