The Daily Money: Why is healthcare so expensive in the US?

Let’s take another look at two notable stories from the weekend that attracted significant interest from our readers.

Here’s a harsh reality: Americans are spending significantly more on healthcare than any other nation, yet we have the lowest life expectancy among major affluent countries.

This disparity can largely be traced to the distinctive features of our healthcare system, as reported by Ken Alltucker. For instance, we tend to compensate doctors more for conducting medical procedures rather than for promoting the health of patients, we often obscure costs from patients, and we allocate resources towards activities that do not directly enhance patients’ well-being.

5 countries that will incentivize you to move

If the thought of relocating to a different country excites you, you’re in luck, says Kathleen Wong.

While relocating can be costly, several countries are incentivizing foreigners with financial assistance. Over the past few years, various programs have emerged, such as grants for moving to Tuscan villages and Mediterranean islands offering homes at ridiculously low prices that rival a cup of coffee. For many exhausted Americans, these options appear to be a perfect escape from the fast-paced life in the U.S.

We’re showcasing our editors’ top stories for 2024. Here’s one from Nathan Diller!

The new Norwegian Cruise Line ship, Norwegian Aqua, was spotted at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard in Venice, Italy, recently. Currently under construction, it stands out with its extensive exposed metalwork, covered with tarps and scaffolding, appearing significantly larger in the wet dock than in the open seas where ships typically reside. Even in its unfinished state, it upholds the excellence expected from the Prima Plus Class.

The Aqua, scheduled for its debut in March, is 10% larger than previous ships in the Prima Class, accommodating roughly 3,600 passengers at double occupancy (although it’s still smaller than the former Breakaway Plus Class). In contrast, both Norwegian Prima and Viva have a capacity of nearly 3,200 each.

And this isn’t the only sizable craft on the horizon.
