‘Deeply Disturbing’: Mayorkas Critiques Social Media Response to CEO’s Death
Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas has spoken out against the language circulating on social media after the murder of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, Brian Thompson, labeling some of the celebratory comments as “deeply disturbing.”
In an interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” with Margaret Brennan, Mayorkas expressed concern over the admiration directed towards the individual charged with the heinous act.
“The language used on social media in relation to this murder is deeply disturbing,” Mayorkas remarked. “It highlights the troubling issues that are surfacing in our society, which unfortunately can lead to violence and domestic extremism.”
“I am particularly troubled by the valor being ascribed to someone accused of taking the life of a father of two in the streets of New York City,” Mayorkas added.
Luigi Mangione, charged with the shooting death of Thompson, faced federal charges in a Manhattan court last week. The charges include murder with a gun and two instances of stalking, meaning that if found guilty, he could face the death penalty.
Following Thompson’s death, social media saw a surge of users sharing their grievances regarding denied health insurance claims. Many recounted experiences where they were denied critical medical treatments, and others shared stories of loved ones who could not get lifesaving care, resulting in overwhelming medical debts.
Mayorkas pointed out that officials have noticed an increase in “narratives of hate” and “anti-government sentiment” emerging in discussions surrounding the incident.
“We have observed personal grievances being expressed through violent language, intertwined with these narratives,” stated Mayorkas.
When asked if he would label the shooting suspect as a terrorist, Mayorkas refrained from commenting, citing the ongoing investigation.
“Let’s pause for a moment to acknowledge the profound tragedy. A family man and father of two has been killed in cold blood on the streets of New York City, and that’s our priority,” Mayorkas conveyed to CBS.
