The Vivienne, Winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, Passes Away at 32: ‘Heartbroken and Devastated’
James Lee Williams, widely known as The Vivienne, the inaugural champion of “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK,” has sadly passed away at the age of 32.
The British drag performer passed away over the weekend, a spokesperson, Simon Jones, confirmed via an Instagram statement.
“These are words I never wanted to write. Viv was not just a friend; they were a client and someone I deeply cared for,” Jones expressed. “From our first meeting in 2019, I knew we would create something special together, leading to me becoming their manager. Their talent was extraordinary, and they lit up every room they entered. No one has ever made me laugh as much as Viv. Their comedic brilliance and sharp humor were unparalleled.”
Jones indicated that there would be no further details released and requested privacy for Williams’ family, who “are immensely proud of everything James accomplished in their life and career.”
The Drag and Theater Communities Honor The Vivienne
In another post, Jones shared a heartfelt tribute for the drag queen, who was currently cast as the Childcatcher in the U.K. tour of the musical “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” Williams was expected to perform until late March, according to the production’s official site.
“It’s tragic that their career was just taking off. Viv found a true passion and success in musical theater, where they flourished. I am heartbroken and devastated by this news,” Jones wrote.
A cherished figure within the drag and musical theater communities, The Vivienne’s passing has led to a surge of tributes from fellow celebrities and “RuPaul” alumni.
“This is an enormous loss for the British drag scene and for the world. Viv showcased the best of UK drag both on stage and internationally,” commented drag performer Tia Kofi, winner of season two of “RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK vs. the World.”
“She left a lasting impression in our hearts and on the stages she graced,” stated drag queen and Broadway star Jinkx Monsoon on X. “It’s too early for her final curtain call, but I know she deserves a standing ovation.”
“Drag Race” judge Michelle Visage took to social media to share her honors for Williams: “You were always present, always laughing, always generous, always spot-on. I adored every aspect of you—your laughter, wit, talent, and drag. But what I cherished most was your friendship. You were a guiding light for so many. Witnessing your West End debut was a thrilling moment, as I saw your dream materialize right before my eyes. I feel fortunate to have known you and to have shared so many laughs.”
