Aubrey Plaza Appeals for ‘Privacy’ Following Husband Jeff Baena’s Passing


Aubrey Plaza, along with the family of her deceased husband Jeff Baena, is requesting privacy as they cope with the loss of the filmmaker.

 

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy,” a statement from Plaza and the Baena family shared with YSL News says. “We are extremely thankful for all the support we’ve received. We kindly ask that you respect our need for privacy during this time.”

According to information obtained by YSL News, Baena passed away at the age of 47 at his home in California on Friday, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

On Monday, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office announced that the cause of death was a suicide.

 

Baena was recognized for directing films like “The Little Hours” and “Horse Girl” and for co-writing “I Heart Huckabees” alongside David O. Russell. His last film was “Spin Me Round,” released in 2022, featuring Plaza and Alison Brie. Plaza also acted in “Life After Beth” and “The Little Hours.”

Plaza and Baena had been married since 2020, having started their relationship in 2010. A GQ article from 2022 revealed that they first met while playing Balderdash.

In a December 2021 appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Plaza shared details about her spontaneous wedding to Baena. While discussing their celebration at home during COVID-19 lockdowns, she told Ellen, “I mentioned it was our ten-year anniversary, and we should do something special, maybe get ice cream. Then I made a joke about getting married, and he replied that it would be too quick for that.”

 

Plaza continued, “I said, ‘What if we got married on our actual anniversary?’ So I Googled it and found OneHourMarriage.com, then I called around 5 p.m. and asked them if they could come over in an hour to perform the ceremony in our backyard.”

‘Golden Globes’ Winners Pay Homage to Jeff Baena

Since Baena’s passing, many tributes and condolences for Plaza have emerged. At the Golden Globes on Sunday, director Brady Corbet of “The Brutalist” acknowledged Plaza and Baena in his acceptance speech for best director.

“My heart goes out tonight to Aubrey Plaza and Jeff’s family,” he expressed at the conclusion of his speech.

 

Alison Brie and Other Celebrities Celebrate Jeff Baena’s Life

Alison Brie shared an Instagram post saying, “Rest in peace, my friend.” Meanwhile, Molly Shannon, who frequently collaborated with Baena, posted several photos with him along with a broken heart emoji.

 

Adam Pally expressed on his Instagram story, “My heart aches for my friend Aubrey, the Baena family, and for everyone who shared time with him on set or at his home.”

Numerous other celebrities also extended their support to Plaza on Instagram.

Selma Blair commented on Plaza’s recent post, “Words cannot adequately express the pain during this time. Only love, strength, and support can help. I am so deeply sorry.”

 

Baena leaves behind his wife Plaza, mother Barbara Stern and stepfather Roger Stern, father Scott Baena and stepmother Michele Baena, brother Brad Baena, as well as step-siblings Bianca Gabay and Jed Fluxman.
