Trump Proposes Renaming Gulf of Mexico to ‘Gulf of America’
WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump announced on Tuesday his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.
“We are set to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Gulf of America — such a lovely name,” he stated at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. “It’s fitting.”
He did not provide specific details about when or how the name change would be implemented, promising to share more information later.
“We are making this change because we contribute significantly to this region, and it rightfully belongs to us,” he added.
Immediately following Trump’s announcement, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene took to social media to express her support and stated she would propose a bill to formally rename this water body, which extends from Mexico along the southern U.S. coastline.
A former legislator from Mississippi had proposed a similar name change in 2012 as a joke, suggesting that the body of water be called the Gulf of America for “official purposes within the state of Mississippi.”
The reason for Trump’s timing on this proposal is not entirely clear. He remarked to reporters that Gulf of America “sounds wonderful” and is an “appropriate” name, considering it also borders Cuba.
He expressed his motivation for the change stems from issues such as trade imbalances with Mexico, illegal immigration at the U.S. southern border, and drug trafficking concerns.
