Bill Belichick considering NFL return? Several teams, including the Las Vegas Raiders, are reportedly interested in UNC coach
Could Bill Belichick possibly leave UNC after just one season?
According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, several NFL teams, including the Las Vegas Raiders, have reached out to the acclaimed coach, who started his tenure at the University of North Carolina only a month ago. Tom Brady, who now has a minority ownership stake in the Raiders and was Belichick’s quarterback during their successful run with the New England Patriots, has been exploring his former coach’s interest in returning to the NFL, as per reports.
Belichick parted ways with the Patriots after 24 years following the 2023 season. He interviewed for the head coaching position with the Atlanta Falcons last year when they were on the hunt for a new coach but ultimately lost the opportunity to Raheem Morris. In 2024, he focused on various media projects while still engaging with the football world in different ways.
The Raiders dismissed their previous head coach Antonio Pierce on Tuesday after finishing his first full season with a 4-13 record. Pierce had a 5-4 record as the interim coach in 2023 after taking over from Josh McDaniels, who was fired following a disappointing loss to Detroit on a Monday night.
Currently, five other teams are also seeking head coaches: The Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots, and New York Jets. Belichick has previously been an interim head coach for the Jets, although he never actually led a game for them, and he has openly criticized the organization, which was a weak opponent for the Patriots during his dominant years.
It remains uncertain which other teams might be interested in him.
Belichick was appointed to lead the Tar Heels on December 11. This is his first experience as a college coach, and he has been busy assembling his coaching staff since then. His five-year deal has a $10 million buyout clause if he decides to leave before June 1.
During his introductory press event on December 12, Belichick expressed, “I had some great years in the NFL, which was fine. But this feels like a dream come true.”
When questioned about the potential of returning to the NFL if situations change, he stated, “My goal is not to leave.”
The Raiders have yet to respond to a request from YSL News Sports concerning their search for a new coach.
Belichick, who is 72 years old, holds a remarkable record with six Lombardi Trophies from his time with New England, along with two additional ones as the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants in 1986 and 1990. As an NFL head coach, he has achieved 333 wins, placing him second only to Hall of Famer Don Shula with 347 wins.
