Upcoming MLB Season: Latest Rumors about Arenado, Sasaki, and More
The MLB season is rapidly approaching, with pitchers and catchers set to report in just over a month. Despite this tight timeline, there remains a wealth of free agents and trade prospects available who could significantly bolster your favorite team.
Here are the latest updates on free agency and trade rumors from around Major League Baseball.
Are the Red Sox Looking at Bregman?
According to Bob Nightengale from YSL News, Red Sox manager Alex Cora has openly expressed his wish to bring Bregman on board. However, Nightengale also mentions that GM Craig Breslow is cautious due to Rafael Devers’s reluctance to shift from third base and Triston Casas’s commitment to first base. Additionally, the team aims to provide more chances for Vaughn Grissom in the majors, which limits Bregman’s potential roles in the infield. The Red Sox have four of their top five prospects capable of playing shortstop, meaning Bregman’s addition could complicate player promotions from the minor leagues.
Fortunately, for the Red Sox, this situation seems indicative of a “rich get richer” dilemma, as they could find themselves with an abundance of talent.
Arenado Interested in Joining the Red Sox
MLB.com has reported that Arenado is willing to waive his no-trade clause with the St. Louis Cardinals to join the Boston Red Sox. Fenway Park is a noted haven for right-handed hitters, and given Arenado’s recent power struggles—hitting only 16 homers in 2024—moving to Boston could rejuvenate his performance as he approaches 34.
Is Arraez Moving to the Yankees?
With Gleyber Torres heading to Detroit, the Yankees are looking thin at second base and are exploring replacement options. Luis Arraez of the San Diego Padres is a frequently mentioned candidate. The soon-to-be 28-year-old recently captured his third consecutive batting title; however, Jon Heyman of the New York Post indicates that his lack of versatility offensively and defensively might be a disadvantage for the Yankees.
Currently, the Yankees are considering shifting Jazz Chisholm back to second base and moving DJ LeMahieu or Oswaldo Cabrera to third as their primary strategy.
Padres are Favorites for Roki Sasaki?
While many speculate that Sasaki may have already decided on the Dodgers, MLB executives are now reconsidering, suggesting that the Padres could be a top contender for his services. The Padres have yet to make any significant financial moves this offseason, which may be appealing for a player like Sasaki whose asking price is relatively low this year.
Sasaki, who was mentored by Yu Darvish, might be influenced to join the Padres to play alongside one of his idols, rather than the glitz of Los Angeles.
The Padres urgently need pitching help, especially with Joe Musgrove out for the entire season and the likelihood of losing both Michael King and Dylan Cease to free agency after 2025.
Is the Market for Anthony Santander Heating Up?
After an impressive 44 home runs in 2024, it’s surprising that Anthony Santander’s market has been sluggish. As he approaches his 30s in 2025, he still showcases considerable power and has improved his OPS each year for the last four seasons.
It appears that teams are finally starting to show interest in him. Ari Alexander from KPRC reports that the Toronto Blue Jays have officially made an offer to Santander. Given their desperate need for power, with only Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hitting 20 homers in 2024, Santander would be a perfect addition to their outfield.
Pete Alonso May Be Forced into a Short-Term Contract
Reports from ESPN’s Bob Nightengale and Jeff Passan suggest that Pete Alonso may not secure the deal he desires in free agency, potentially leading him to accept a short-term contract with several opt-out clauses. Nightengale notes that eight teams have shown interest in Alonso, including the Blue Jays and Red Sox, but the fact that he remains unsigned indicates dissatisfaction from one or both parties regarding the proposals.
Since Guerrero Jr. has stated intentions to join the Red Sox if Toronto doesn’t extend his contract before spring training, the Red Sox might be less inclined to overly invest in Alonso. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays will likely wait to finalize Guerrero’s situation before making a more appealing offer to Alonso. This scenario might create an opportunity for another team to attempt to secure Alonso with a longer-term offer.
