NFL Plans to Relocate Rams-Vikings Game to Arizona If Wildfires Disrupt Los Angeles

As severe wildfires continue to impact the greater Los Angeles region, the NFL is readying an alternative plan in case Monday night’s match between the NFC West champion Rams and Minnesota Vikings at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood cannot be held safely.

“The safety of the Los Angeles community is the NFL’s main concern. We are thankful for the relentless efforts of first responders and extend our thoughts to those affected by the fires,” stated the league in a message on Wednesday evening.

“We are still preparing to host the Vikings-Rams game as planned for Monday night at SoFi Stadium. Like all games, there are backup plans in case a venue change is necessary. If it comes to that, the game will take place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ, on Monday night.

“We’ll keep a close eye on the situation and will maintain communication with public officials, the teams, and the NFL Players Association.”

Rams players have shown their support via social media, with Cooper Kupp posting on X: “Thinking of everyone affected by the fires. A huge thank you to the firefighters, first responders, and all those doing their utmost in these challenging times.”

If a venue change occurs, it won’t be the first instance where the NFL had to relocate a game in Southern California due to wildfires. A game between the San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins in 2003 was moved to Tempe, Arizona, then the home of the Cardinals. The Chargers, who had to relocate, ended up losing 26-10.

The Chargers, who moved from San Diego to LA in 2017, may face another disruption ahead of their wild-card playoff game against the AFC South champion Texans in Houston on Saturday afternoon. They adjusted their practice schedule on Wednesday due to concerns over air quality.
