This Friday marks the debut of a major update packed with new characters, maps, and rewards for Marvel Rivals. This third-person hero shooter allows players to embody beloved Marvel heroes and villains. The update is titled Season 1: Eternal Night Falls.

Launched in December, Marvel Rivals has quickly ascended the video game rankings. Its official Discord community has surged to over 2.2 million members, making it the largest gaming server on the platform, according to a Marvel announcement.

What is Marvel Rivals?

Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play, third-person shooter where players join teams of two to tackle various challenges set in the Marvel Universe. With a roster exceeding 30 characters, players can choose from iconic figures like Captain America, Spider-Man, Groot, Venmo, Thor, and Wolverine.

Developed by Marvel Games and the Chinese company NetEase Games, Marvel Rivals was released in December.

Many gaming enthusiasts liken Marvel Rivals to Overwatch, which is a free first-person shooter where players also team up in pairs, taking place 60 years into a future version of a fictional Earth. Overwatch was launched by Blizzard in 2016, notable for their work on World of Warcraft.

What Content Will Be Available in Season 1: Eternal Night Falls?

Season 1: Eternal Night Falls will introduce the Fantastic Four as new playable characters. At the launch, Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic will be available, with Human Torch and The Thing being introduced later, as per the Marvel announcement.

Additionally, three new maps will be included in this season: Empire of Eternal Night located in New York City, Sanctum Sanctorum in Midtown, and Central Park.

A brand new game mode named Doom Match will also be unveiled. This mode allows 8 to 12 players to compete on one map, each representing distinct factions that are in conflict with one another. Points can be earned by eliminating opponents, and at the conclusion of the match, the top 50% will be declared the winners.

The update will feature a special event called Midnight Features, where players can complete seasonal activities to unlock exclusive temporary rewards, according to Marvel’s announcement.

Finally, Marvel Rivals is teaming up with Twitch to facilitate Twitch Drops—rewards players can earn by viewing streams of the game on the platform.

According to another Marvel update, several enhancements for the base game, including improvements for Vanguard characters (designed to protect teammates) and Duelists (the primary combat characters), will be part of Friday’s release.
