Yankees Supporters Suspended by MLB After Incident Involving Mookie Betts at the World Series

Major League Baseball has issued an indefinite ban on two fans of the New York Yankees from all major league ballparks after they engaged in inappropriate behavior with Mookie Betts, an outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers, during Game 4 of the 2024 World Series.

A letter sent this week to the individuals, Austin Capobianco and John P. Hansen, which was later obtained by YSL News Sports, outlined the MLB’s decision. It stated that they “interfered with the game by deliberately and aggressively grabbing a player,” indicating that their actions presented a serious risk to Betts’ safety and exceeded the limits of acceptable fan behavior. As a result, MLB proclaimed an indefinite ban from all stadiums, offices, and facilities under its jurisdiction.

“You are also permanently prohibited from attending any events organized by or affiliated with MLB. If you are found at any MLB venue or event, you will be removed from the site and could face arrest for trespassing,” the letter warned.

This action, first reported by the New York Post, took place during the bottom half of the first inning in Game 4 when a fly ball hit by Gleyber Torres headed towards the right field bleachers, an area with minimal foul space between fans and the field.

Betts made an outstanding catch, appearing to snag the ball just as it entered the stands. Although there may not have been a call for fan interference if he had not caught it, the two fans continued to interact with him as if they were trying to extract the ball from his glove.

Later, Capobianco expressed to ESPN his expectation of returning for Game 5, stating, “I patrol that wall and they know that.” Nonetheless, both he and Hansen were barred from attending the subsequent game by the Yankees and MLB.

The Dodgers secured the World Series championship with a dramatic win in Game 5.
