Kohl’s Set to Shutter 27 Underperforming Locations by April – Find Out Which Stores Are Affected

Kohl’s will shut down 27 low-performing stores by April. Here’s the list

Kohl’s is set to close 27 of its less successful stores by April 2025 as part of the retailer’s ongoing efforts to transform its business.

The company, based in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, cited decreasing sales as a factor in this decision and confirmed that all staff at affected locations have been notified and provided with a competitive severance package or the chance to apply for other positions within Kohl’s, according to a January 9 press release.

“Kohl’s remains confident in the strength of its profitable stores, but these specific locations were not meeting performance standards,” the retailer stated.

Additionally, an e-commerce fulfillment center in San Bernardino, California, which has been operational since 2010, will close in May 2025. Kohl’s mentioned that they can now fulfill online orders directly from their store locations, negating the need for the fulfillment center.

“We treat these decisions with the utmost seriousness,” stated CEO Tom Kingsbury, who will resign from his position as CEO on January 15. “As we advance our long-term growth strategy, it is essential to make tough but necessary choices to maintain the future health of our business for our customers and teams.”

Ashley Buchanan, former CEO of Michaels Companies, will assume the role of CEO at Kohl’s beginning January 15. Kingsbury will continue to serve as an advisor and remain on the company’s board until his retirement in May 2025.

Kohl’s announced in November 2024 that it anticipates a sales decline of 7% to 8% for 2024. The retailer will release its full-year sales report in February.
