Deion Sanders of Colorado Expresses Interest in Las Vegas Raiders Position, According to Sources
According to a report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Saturday, Deion Sanders, the head football coach at Colorado, has shown significant interest in the head coaching vacancy with the Las Vegas Raiders.
The report indicates that “associates of Sanders with NFL connections” have communicated with the Raiders to signify Sanders’ desire for the position.
In 2022, Deion Sanders mentioned on “60 Minutes” that he would never be interested in the NFL, regardless of his achievements in college football. However, he recently softened his stance in an interview with “Good Morning America,” stating, “The only situation in which I would think about the NFL is to coach my sons.”
In his second season leading the Buffaloes, Deion Sanders secured a 9-4 record and guided the team to the Alamo Bowl against BYU. Notable players he has coached include Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter and his son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, both projected to be top draft picks in the upcoming NFL draft.
During his inaugural season with Colorado, Deion Sanders had a record of 4-8, taking over a team that had only managed nine wins in three seasons under previous coach Karl Dorrell. The Pro Football Hall of Famer also enjoyed a successful stint at FCS Jackson State, finishing with a record of 27-6 over three seasons.
This season, the Las Vegas Raiders ended up with the No. 6 pick in the 2025 NFL draft, coming off a 4-13 finish. They stand a chance to select Shedeur Sanders, who is contending with Miami’s Cam Ward for the title of the top quarterback in this draft.
Following the termination of Antonio Pierce after his first season as coach, the Raiders are in need of a quarterback, having recently rotated between backup Gardner Minshew and second-year player Aidan O’Connell in 2024.
Deion Sanders, recognized as the 1994 Defensive Player of the Year, is a two-time Super Bowl champion with the San Francisco 49ers (1994-95) and the Dallas Cowboys (1995-96). He was chosen as the No. 5 pick overall in the draft and has earned accolades as a six-time first-team All-Pro and two-time second-team All-Pro.
