Hollywood events postponed or canceled due to LA fires: Weeknd concert, Oscar nominations, and more
Numerous significant Hollywood events tied to the awards season have been canceled or rescheduled due to the severe wildfires affecting Los Angeles.
On Monday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced it would once again delay the announcement of the 2025 Oscar nominations. These nominations will now be unveiled on January 23 during a virtual event, without on-site media presence, changing from the original date of January 17.
Furthermore, the Academy has extended the voting period for this year’s Oscar nominations to January 17 and has canceled the traditional nominees luncheon set for February 10.
“We are deeply saddened by the fires’ devastating effects and the significant losses suffered by many in our community,” stated Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang. “The Academy has always aimed to unify the film industry, and we pledge our support to stand together through these challenging times.”
Since January 7, six wildfires have ignited across LA, wreaking havoc on neighborhoods and leaving widespread destruction. As of Monday, three of the six fires remained active. The Eaton Fire near Pasadena was 33% contained, while the Hurst Fire near Sylmar was 95% contained. The Pacific Palisades Fire — the most destructive fire in LA’s history — was only 14% contained, having burned 36 square miles and devastated the community.
Strong winds were forecast for Monday, raising concerns for firefighters’ progress, with coastal winds expected to reach 40-50 mph. To date, 24 lives have been lost due to the ongoing fires.
In response to the disaster, actress Jamie Lee Curtis announced a $1 million donation to assist fire victims, and William McNamara helped rescue animals. Additionally, celebrities like “This Is Us” star Milo Ventimiglia, Paris Hilton, and reality stars Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag have lost their homes in the fire.
Grammy Awards modify format after LA wildfires
The Recording Academy confirmed in a letter to its members that the 2025 Grammy ceremony will still take place on February 2.
However, due to the wildfires in LA, the show will now emphasize “raising additional funds for wildfire relief” and pay tribute to the courage of first responders who heroically work to protect the community.
