“Celebrating 25 Years: Is ‘106 & Park’ Set for a Grand Return?”

BET’s popular show ‘106 & Park’ might return to celebrate its 25th anniversary, according to the CEO

BET’s “106 & Park,” a favorite daily countdown show that captivated R&B and hip hop fans in the early 2000s, may be making a comeback as it approaches its milestone anniversary.

In an interview last week on “The Breakfast Club,” Scott Mills, the network’s President and CEO, alluded to a possible modern reboot of the show. He mentioned, “We recognize the affection people have for ‘106 & Park’, and just because it doesn’t fit as a traditional TV show anymore doesn’t mean it’s finished. We could revive ‘106 & Park’ as a podcast or a digital experience.”

He continued, “We are reimagining what ‘106 & Park’ could be by 2025 because its role is significant,” hinting at exciting plans ahead. “With the 25th anniversary of ‘106 & Park’ coming up, we have some thrilling developments in store.”

During the discussion, singer and actress Chloe Bailey, 26, shared how the show influenced her childhood and her generation.

“I would rush home from school just to watch it,” Bailey reminisced. “It was great to see people who looked like me excel in a field I aspired to be part of one day.”

What is ‘106 & Park’?

Since its debut in 2000, ‘106 & Park’ quickly became the essential weeknight program for Black millennials, showcasing their favorite music videos and featuring exclusive celebrity interviews right after school. The show welcomed a wide array of notable guests, including musicians, actors, and models like Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Jay Z, Destiny’s Child, 50 Cent, Usher, Tyra Banks, Denzel Washington, and Halle Berry.

The show featured the hottest names in entertainment, always with a lively studio audience cheering them on. It spotlighted emerging talents and provided young fans with an up-close look at their favorite stars’ journeys.

“One of the things that drove ‘106 & Park’ was the lack of [urban] artists for 14- to 16-year-old girls to truly connect with,” Stephen Hill, who was the VP of music programming at BET, shared with Entertainment Weekly in 2002. “This was a clear gap to fill. You have credible hip-hop and adult hip-hop, but there weren’t any groups like New Edition. ‘106 & Park’ was created to fill that gap perfectly.”

Bow Wow, who is famously known as “Mr. 106 & Park,” was one such artist who endeared himself to fans. BET noted that he holds the record for the most retired videos on their platform and became a host of the show in the early 2010s.

This cherished program, which featured various hosts over the years, aired its final episode in 2014.
