Texas QB Quinn Ewers announces NFL draft declaration, giving up final year of college eligibility
Quinn Ewers is heading to the NFL.
The Texas Longhorns quarterback revealed on X (formerly known as Twitter) early Wednesday that he is entering the NFL draft after three successful years with the Longhorns, opting to skip his last year of college eligibility.
“I have always dreamed of playing football on the forty acres. The last three years have been incredible beyond my imagination. The bonds I’ve formed with my coaches and teammates will stay with me forever,” Ewers stated in his announcement video.
“I am sincerely grateful for the chance to play football in my home state and at the greatest university in the world. After prayerful consideration, I am officially declaring for the NFL draft.”
Ewers’ decision comes shortly after he told ESPN in an interview before the College Football Playoff Cotton Bowl semifinal that he did not foresee returning to college football next year.
The 6-foot-2 quarterback began his college career at Ohio State in 2021 before transferring to Texas. In a twist, Ewers’ collegiate journey ended against his former team, as he was tackled by his freshman roommate Jack Sawyer, a defensive lineman for Ohio State, resulting in a game-changing 83-yard fumble return touchdown.
This past season, Ewers faced several challenges, including an oblique strain in Week 3 against Texas-San Antonio, which sidelined him for two games. He also suffered a high-ankle sprain late in the regular season that persisted into the College Football Playoff, limiting his mobility and prompting Texas to utilize backup quarterback Arch Manning for certain plays.
One of Ewers’ standout performances this season occurred in Week 2 against Michigan, where he completed 66.7% of his passes for 246 yards and threw three touchdowns, contributing to a ranked victory for the Longhorns. Another highlight came during the CFP Peach Bowl against No. 4 Arizona State, when Ewers connected with wide receiver Matthew Golden for a crucial 28-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-13, helping keep Texas’ championship hopes alive and advancing them to the semifinal.
Over his three seasons as Texas’ starting quarterback, Ewers achieved a 27-9 record, secured the 2023 Big 12 Championship, and made two appearances in the College Football Playoff semifinals—his first being the program’s inaugural CFP appearance.
He concludes his tenure at Austin having completed 64.9% of his passes for a total of 9,128 yards and 68 touchdown passes, as well as adding eight rushing touchdowns.
Ewers is currently ranked as the No. 5 quarterback on ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.’s prospect list for April’s NFL draft. He is anticipated to be among the top quarterbacks in this year’s draft class, which also includes Miami’s Cam Ward, Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, Ole Miss’s Jaxson Dart, and Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, among others.
