I’m a huge wrestling fan.
If there’s professional wrestling on television, especially with larger-than-life personalities like “Stone Cold” and “The Rock,” I have to tune in. (My wife isn’t thrilled about this.) When it comes to arm wrestling, I was a fan of “Over the Top” back in the day; that Kenny Loggins song still echoes in my mind. I also enjoy an inspiring story involving amateur wrestling, like the new Jennifer Lopez film “Unstoppable,” which tells the remarkable journey of one-legged national champion Anthony Robles. This is our top recommendation this week, but be sure not to miss Cameron Diaz’s first film in ten years or the return of Apple’s uniquely quirky drama “Severance.”
Now, let’s dive into the highlights:
Discover Jennifer Lopez’s True Story in Wrestling Drama ‘Unstoppable’
The inspiring true story “Unstoppable” (now available on Prime Video) is perfect for fans of “Rocky” and stories of underdogs. Jharrel Jerome plays Anthony Robles, a wrestler from Arizona who, despite being born with one leg, rises to stardom in high school but faces a setback when he doesn’t get into his desired school, the prestigious wrestling program at Iowa. He eventually finds the guidance he needs at Arizona State University and gets backing from his single mother Judy (played by Jennifer Lopez) in a journey filled with personal growth and wrestling challenges.
I had a conversation with the real Anthony Robles, a friendly individual who shared insights on what in the film was true versus fictional. He commended Lopez for accurately portraying his mother’s protective nature, particularly in moments where Judy confronts hecklers. “When I first took to the mat, I recall hearing someone laughing in the crowd, and my mom actually spoke up to them. She confronted them directly,” he recounts.
Cameron Diaz Makes Her Comeback in Netflix’s ‘Back in Action’
Cameron Diaz was a dominant figure in the 90s and 2000s, featuring in numerous films like “Charlie’s Angels” and “The Holiday.” After starring in 2014’s “Annie,” she stepped away from the limelight to focus on her family and create a wine brand. Therefore, the title of her new Netflix film, “Back in Action,” co-starring Jamie Foxx, feels quite fitting.
“I felt like I had done everything I needed to,” Diaz explained to my colleague Brendan Morrow regarding her return to Hollywood, where she and Foxx play a duo of secret agents forced back into action when their identities are compromised. Surprisingly, Diaz found she didn’t have to shake off much rust: Acting was “kind of like riding a bike,” she explained. “A chef doesn’t forget how to chop.”
Catch the New Season of Apple’s Unique Series ‘Severance’
Apple’s sci-fi thriller “Severance” has gained a reputation as a word-of-mouth sensation, known for its peculiar premise. The show revolves around employees whose memories from work and their personal lives have been separated. Produced by Ben Stiller and featuring Adam Scott, the series is back for a second season filled with mind-bending twists. Although it mixes “brilliance and absurdity,” TV critic Kelly Lawler notes in her ★★★ review that it may have ventured into overly bizarre territory at times. “Some scenes will make you scratch your head so vigorously you might end up doing amateur brain surgery.”
For those who, like me, haven’t yet enjoyed “Severance” – my watch list just keeps growing! – our friend Bryan Alexander compiled a recap of Season 1 to help get you up to speed (and clarify the concepts of “innies” and “outies”).
