What’s next for the Texans after another divisional round defeat?

The Houston Texans’ season came to a close on Saturday when they faced a loss in the divisional round.

C.J. Stroud faced intense pressure, getting sacked eight times during the Texans’ 23-14 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs. Joe Mixon, the Texans’ running back, contributed with 88 rushing yards and a touchdown. On the defensive side, Will Anderson Jr. stood out, making four tackles, three tackles for loss, and securing two sacks despite the loss.

This marks the second consecutive year the Texans have ended their season in the divisional round of the playoffs.

As back-to-back champions of the AFC South, the Texans head into the offseason facing numerous questions and needs on both offense and defense. What lies ahead for them as they gear up for the 2025 season? YSL News Sports takes a closer look.

Key Free Agents for the Houston Texans

Stefon Diggs

After trading for the wide receiver, the Texans modified Diggs’ contract, effectively turning it into a one-year agreement. Unfortunately, his first season with Houston was cut short after just eight games due to a knee injury.

Diggs wasn’t alone in facing injuries, as the Texans’ receiving corps was significantly affected this season. Nico Collins also missed time, while Tank Dell suffered a severe knee injury in December. When fully healthy, the Texans possess one of the top receiving units in the NFL.

The organization must make a decision regarding Diggs’ future with the team.

Folorunso Fatukasi

Fatukasi participated in 11 games during his first season with the Texans, recording 24 tackles and four tackles for loss. Over seven seasons with the Jets, Jaguars, and Texans, he has started a total of 63 games.

Derek Barnett

Barnett had a strong performance this season as a situational pass rusher, achieving five sacks and leading the NFL with two fumble returns for touchdowns.

Offseason Strategies for the Texans: 3 Key Moves

Enhance the Offensive Line

C.J. Stroud was sacked the most in the AFC this season, with a total of 52 times. He endured a lot of punishment during the divisional round matchup against Kansas City.

The Texans need to strengthen their offensive line to better protect their franchise quarterback. Free agency offers various quality interior linemen, such as Tampa Bay’s Ben Bredeson and Indianapolis’ Ryan Kelly.

Additionally, they could consider the 2025 NFL draft to secure a solid guard, potentially selecting players like Tyler Booker from Alabama or Tate Ratledge from Georgia in either the first or second round.

Re-sign Stefon Diggs

Bringing Stefon Diggs back would be advantageous for the Texans, particularly since Tank Dell may not return next season due to his serious knee injury.

Before being placed on IR with a hamstring issue, Collins was leading the NFL in receiving yards. His rise can be attributed to the presence of Diggs on the field. Both Collins and Diggs are high-volume receivers capable of creating space effectively.

Add Depth to the Defensive Line

Anderson (11 sacks) and Danielle Hunter (12 sacks) were the only teammates in the AFC to each reach 11 sacks this season, contributing nearly half of Houston’s total sacks. The Texans need to focus on bolstering their interior line. Free-agent defensive tackle B.J. Hill from the Bengals would make an immediate impact in Houston.

Draft Needs for the Texans

The Texans should focus on the following positions in the 2025 NFL draft:

  • Offensive Line
  • Defensive Tackle
  • Wide Receiver

The Texans hold six picks in the upcoming draft:

Round 1

Round 2

Round 3

Round 5 (From Buffalo)

Round 7
