Coco Gauff Reflects on Saying Goodbye to TikTok After Her Australian Open Victory

Coco Gauff expresses dismay over TikTok ban after Australian Open progress

Coco Gauff, seeded third, bounced back from dropping her first set of the year on Sunday, coming from behind to beat Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic and move into the Australian Open quarterfinals.

However, what she did following her victory might have been even more notable.

As part of a common practice among tennis players post-match, Gauff took a moment with a marker to write a message on a courtside camera lens. She chose to address the recent ban of TikTok in the United States, which took effect at midnight back home, saying, “‘RIP TikTok USA,” accompanied by a broken heart emoji.

With over 750,000 followers on TikTok, Gauff shared her thoughts on the ban during her post-match press conference.

“I couldn’t access it after my match. I honestly thought I could use it since I was in Australia,” she explained. “I hope it returns soon.  I really enjoy TikTok. It’s a way to unwind for me, and I often view it before matches. I guess I’ll have to read more books and be a more productive person now. Perhaps it’s a hidden blessing.”

Gauff’s next opponent is 11th seed Paula Badosa from Spain, with the winner likely facing two-time champion Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated teenager Mirra Andreeva 6-1, 6-2.

Exciting quarterfinal: Novak Djokovic vs. Carlos Alcaraz

Novak Djokovic stormed into the quarterfinals of the Australian Open on Sunday and is set to face a familiar rival.

However, before turning his focus to the upcoming match against Carlos Alcaraz, the seventh-seeded Serbian had some sharp words for the tournament’s official broadcaster.

Djokovic opted not to do an on-court interview and instead offered a brief thank-you to the audience after his decisive 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory over Jiri Lehecka. He took issue with Channel Nine reporter Tony Jones, who had humorously criticized Djokovic and his supporters just two days prior.

“Novak he’s over-rated, Novak’s a has-been. Novak kick him out. Oh, I’m glad they (his supporters) can’t hear me,” Jones was quoted as saying.

Djokovic stated he would maintain his media boycott until he receives an apology from Jones.

“Given that they are the official broadcasters, I’ve decided not to give interviews for Channel Nine,” Djokovic told reporters. “If you wish to penalize me for skipping the on-court interview, that’s fine. I’ll accept it because this is necessary. That’s all there is to say.”
