Is Matthew Stafford considering retirement? Rams quarterback plans to ‘take some time’ to reflect on his future
Matthew Stafford’s 16th season in the NFL concluded with the Los Angeles Rams suffering a 28-22 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional playoffs.
Right after the game, the soon-to-be 37-year-old was questioned about his future plans.
“It’s just 30 minutes after the last game,” Stafford replied to reporters when inquired about next steps. “I’ll take my time to think about it.”
Stafford noted he was “playing some pretty good ball” towards the end of the 2024 NFL season, completing 65.8% of his passes for 3,762 yards, along with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He was also asked whether he thinks he still has several high-quality seasons left in him.
“Sure feels like it,” Stafford replied confidently.
The experienced quarterback hinted at a possible return when he talked about the Rams’ near comeback in the game.
“I love to compete,” Stafford stated, as reported by ESPN. “I enjoy being in those moments. I’m definitely not afraid of them. I gave it my all, and it didn’t go the way I hoped today. But next time I’m out there, I’ll be ready. Let’s do it again.”
Stafford’s wife, Kelly, seemed a bit less certain about his future. In a Monday Instagram post, she suggested that retirement might be a genuine option for her husband.
“There aren’t enough words to express how proud I am,” she shared. “I joke about us being old and tired, but honestly, I never tire of watching you play or seeing our girls cheer for their dad. I’m left wondering if this is it. I guess we will find out.”
The seasoned quarterback has two years left on the four-year, $160 million contract extension he signed after guiding the Rams to a victory in Super Bowl 56.
Both Stafford and the Rams chose not to modify that contract in the 2024 offseason. It remains uncertain whether they will attempt to reduce Stafford’s upcoming $49.6 million cap charge for the 2025 season or maintain the current terms.
Rams head coach Sean McVay mentioned he wasn’t keen on discussing next year’s matters following the game. Nevertheless, he would be delighted if Stafford decides to rejoin the team, whether under the existing contract or a revised one.
“He is a warrior and incredibly tough,” McVay expressed about Stafford in the postgame press conference. “He embodies so many qualities that define what this team has represented, especially for a city undergoing challenges.
“I believe he symbolizes a lot of what is commendable, showing toughness, resilience, and the ability to rise above challenges. He’s an absolute star. I thought he performed exceptionally well tonight with the chances he had. I’m really proud of Matthew Stafford.”
