Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, marks her 60th birthday with a stunning new portrait
A chic new portrait of Duchess Sophie has been revealed in honor of her 60th birthday, which falls on Monday.
The portrait was taken by London fashion photographer Christina Ebenezer at the Bagshot Park residence of Prince Edward and Sophie earlier this month. It showcases the Duchess of Edinburgh beaming with happiness, wearing a black sweater paired with a long, flowing white pleated skirt and nude-colored heels, her hair styled long and loose. Additional photos feature Sophie outdoors in forest-green tailored trousers, a warm brown turtleneck, and a fitted winter white coat.
The Royal Family also shared a video compilation on Instagram showing Sophie engaging in her official duties, greeting athletes, and visiting a children’s hospital.
“Wishing The Duchess of Edinburgh a very happy 60th birthday today!” the social media post expressed.
Sophie was inspired by Ebenezer’s creative vision after seeing her portraits of Letitia Wright and Michaela Coel displayed at the National Portrait Gallery and felt it was important to support an emerging female photographer, according to posts from the Royal Family and Ebenezer’s Instagram.
“The Duchess wanted to collaborate to be photographed in a new light for this upcoming chapter of her life. We had a wonderfully relaxed day shooting at her home, where she and the team created a very inviting atmosphere,” Ebenezer shared, noting that her favorite part was picking out Sophie’s outfits together.
Numerous comments flooded the Royal Family’s Instagram post, celebrating Sophie and applauding the photographer for showcasing her “playful and confident side.”
“She always appears so lovely and demonstrates such a caring spirit in everything she undertakes,” another commenter remarked.
Sophie married Prince Edward in 1999, and they have two children, Lady Louise and James. As she approaches her 60th birthday, she has embraced a “renewed excitement and commitment to her work on gender equality and looks forward to advocating for this important issue in the years ahead,” the palace noted.
