Cooper Kupp discusses his uncertain future with the LA Rams: ‘Who knows what’s going to happen’
Wide receiver Cooper Kupp of the Los Angeles Rams is confident about playing football next season, but he’s uncertain if that will be with the Rams.
“Definitely. Who knows what’s going to happen? A lot of this is outside of my control. We’ll see what unfolds. There were definitely some issues earlier in the season,” Kupp mentioned. “I don’t have any clear idea about how things will pan out. I would, of course, love to stay in L.A., but I have no insight into what the future holds.”
Kupp has two years left on his current contract. If Los Angeles decides to cut him before June 1, they could save $7.52 million against the 2025 salary cap.
As the NFL trade deadline approached, Kupp’s name was mentioned as a potential trade candidate. However, Rams head coach Sean McVay dismissed those trade rumors in October.
Kupp missed four games due to an ankle injury sustained in Week 2 and was also sidelined in Week 18 as the Rams chose to give him rest.
The 31-year-old receiver had 67 receptions, totaling 710 receiving yards and six touchdowns over 12 games this season. His standout year was in 2021 when he achieved the receiver triple crown with 145 catches, 1,947 receiving yards, and 16 touchdowns, earning the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award. His excellent performance continued in the playoffs, where he was named Super Bowl 56 MVP following the Rams’ victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Kupp has struggled with lower body injuries since his spectacular 2021 season, resulting in a drop in his performance. Nevertheless, the eight-year veteran feels he has plenty of great football left to play.
“Oh, absolutely. I’m certain of it. I want to keep playing football,” Kupp asserted. “I believe I still have a lot of good football ahead. I will be playing next year; that’s for sure.”
Kupp’s teammate and friend, Matthew Stafford, is also faced with an uncertain future in Los Angeles. Stafford restructured his contract during the offseason, which extends through the 2026 season.
Regarding his own future, Stafford commented, “It’s just 30 minutes after the last game, so I’ll take my time to consider it.” He spoke to reporters following the Rams’ 28-22 playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. “I feel like I was playing well.”
When asked whether he believes he still has good football left in him, Stafford echoed Kupp’s sentiments.
“It certainly feels like it,” Stafford replied.
