Chris Martin Expresses Gratitude to Mumbai Fans for Embracing Coldplay Amidst Colonial Legacy

Coldplay’s Chris Martin expresses gratitude to Mumbai fans for ‘forgiving us’ regarding British colonial past

Chris Martin appreciates that Coldplay’s fans in India do not blame him for British colonialism.

During a recent concert in Mumbai, the 47-year-old singer expressed that the band “couldn’t ask for a better audience” and was astonished by the warm welcome they received in India despite their British background, as seen in a video shared on social media.

“It’s incredible that you accept us, despite our roots in Great Britain,” he remarked, referencing the historical British rule over India. “Thank you for forgiving us for the wrongs committed by Great Britain and for embracing us in your country.”

His statement received enthusiastic cheers from the audience, though online reactions among fans varied.

One Instagram user humorously commented, “Chris is healing intergenerational trauma with a microphone, a stage, and some music,” while another suggested, “please hold a free concert next time as reparations.”

Another user questioned, “But when exactly did we forgive them?” A different commenter criticized Martin’s words, saying, “What in the white guilt did I just witness?”

Coldplay last performed in Mumbai in 2016, headlining the Global Citizen Festival.

The band is currently touring for their Music of the Spheres World Tour. They began 2025 with concerts in the United Arab Emirates before traveling to India, with their next shows scheduled for the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India, on Saturday and Sunday.

When tickets for Coldplay’s Indian concerts became available last year, fans were disappointed as they sold out rapidly, with resales reaching as high as $11,000, according to CNN.

The ticketing platform, BookMyShow, issued a statement condemning ticket scalping, which is illegal in India. They also mentioned that they “have reported the issue to the police and will fully cooperate with the investigation.”
