Liam Coen Makes the Leap: Buccaneers Offensive Coordinator Accepts Jaguars Head Coaching Position

Buccaneers’ OC Liam Coen announces he will become head coach for Jaguars

Just one day after expressing that he was no longer pursuing the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach role, Liam Coen has changed his mind.

The offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers informed the team Thursday night that he intends to accept the head coaching position with the Jaguars, according to a source familiar with the situation who spoke to YSL News Sports on the condition of anonymity, as the agreement hasn’t been made official yet.

The Buccaneers were prepared to offer Coen a contract that would have made him the highest-paid coordinator in the league.

The Jaguars parted ways with head coach Doug Pederson earlier this month after three years with the franchise. The organization initially planned to retain general manager Trent Baalke, but he was dismissed on Wednesday afternoon.

Following that, Coen met with the Jaguars on Thursday, according to reports.

ā€œAfter a series of talks with Trent Baalke this week, we concluded that it was best for both parties to part ways respectfully, effective immediately,” Jaguars owner Shad Khan noted in a statement. “I thank Trent for his contributions over the last five years.”

Khan announced that Ethan Waugh will step in as the interim general manager.

Out of the seven head coaching openings this offseason, four have now been filled: Jacksonville, Chicago, New England, and the New York Jets.

Positions are still available in Dallas, Las Vegas, and New Orleans.
