Reese Witherspoon Reflects on ‘Legally Blonde’ During Jury Duty Experience: “You Went to Law School!”

Reese Witherspoon shares how ‘Legally Blonde’ came up during jury duty: ‘You attended law school’

Although Elle Woods may have graduated from Harvard Law School, Reese Witherspoon did not.

The actress, who played the role of a sorority girl who becomes a lawyer in the 2001 film “Legally Blonde,” discussed how this famous character impacted her experience during jury duty while appearing on “The Graham Norton Show” on Friday.

Witherspoon shared that she was called to serve as a juror for a dog bite case in Beverly Hills, California, approximately seven years after her movie debuted.

When it was time to elect a foreman for the jury, Witherspoon mentioned she was the only one nominated by her fellow jurors.

“I was like, ‘Why did you choose me?!'” Witherspoon remembered. “And they replied, ‘You went to law school.'”

She continued, “This is quite distressing. I certainly did not attend law school. I didn’t complete college. I simply portrayed a lawyer in a film once!”

Will Ferrell, her co-star from “You’re Cordially Invited,” who was also on “Graham Norton,” asked how the case ended. Witherspoon replied that the woman who put her hand into the dog fight lost the case.

“What did your mother always say? ‘Don’t put your hand in a dogfight!'” Witherspoon remarked, to which Ferrell jokingly responded, “I’ve always told my kids to ‘Put your hands in dogfights!’ I feel awful!”

In “Legally Blonde,” which is inspired by Amanda Brown’s novel, Witherspoon’s character Elle Woods enrolls in Harvard Law School to win back her boyfriend. The film, nominated for a Golden Globe, featured Selma Blair and Luke Wilson and earned $141.8 million globally.

Witherspoon returned to her role in 2003’s “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde,” which also made over $100 million at the box office. A spin-off titled “Legally Blondes” was released in 2009 but did not feature Witherspoon, and a stage musical based on “Legally Blonde” premiered in 2007.

In May, Amazon Prime Video announced a prequel series named “Elle,” which is being produced by Witherspoon’s media company, Hello Sunshine. The series will explore Woods’ high school years, delving into the experiences that shaped her into the beloved character fans know today.
