Authorities reported that a shooting at a grocery store in northern Indiana led to the deaths of two individuals and injuries to two police officers on Monday.

The incident occurred at Martin’s Super Market in Elkhart, Indiana, during the early evening hours. Jessica McBrier, spokesperson for the Elkhart Police Department, informed the media that the shooter opened fire within the store. Two officers who responded to the situation engaged in a gunfight with the assailant, who was subsequently killed, as stated by the police.

The officers were transported to a nearby hospital and are reported to be in stable condition. McBrier did not provide further details about the victims or the shooter.

According to McBrier, both individuals who lost their lives were inside the grocery store. The circumstances surrounding the suspected shooter’s death remain unclear.

“Our hearts go out to all those affected by this tragic event,” McBrier expressed. “Today is a heartbreaking day for Elkhart.”

She assured the community that there was no ongoing threat and that updates would be provided as more information became available. The homicide unit is currently handling the investigation.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun has also responded to the shooting.

“As we gather more information regarding the shooting in Elkhart, we are in contact with both state and local law enforcement,” Braun stated. “Maureen and I extend our prayers to the victims and their families.”

Elkhart is located approximately 15 miles east of South Bend, Indiana.

‘My Children Were on My Mind’

Erin Swary, a shopper at Martin’s, recounted her frightening experience during an interview with WNDU-TV on Monday evening. She explained that she was in the checkout line when the gunfire erupted.

“I was engaged in small talk with the bagger and watching the total on my bill when we suddenly heard a loud noise. At first, I thought it might just be a balloon popping,” she told WNDU-TV. “I know it sounds crazy.”

Swary noted that six to eight shots followed, and she instinctively ducked as she observed others in the store taking cover.

“All I could think about was my kids and the fear that if the shooter came around the corner, I might not make it,” she shared with the news outlet. “I was terrified for my own safety. When faced with that kind of noise, you can’t help but assume someone is randomly causing chaos.”
