Unmatched Basketball: Recap of Monday Night Wins by Lunar Owls and Laces
MEDLEY, Fla. — Two of the six Unrivaled teams have completed the first two weeks of the women’s basketball league season without any losses.
The exciting part is fans won’t have to wait much longer to watch them clash.
The Lunar Owls and Laces, both boasting 4-0 records, will face off on Friday night in the second match of Unrivaled’s third week.
League co-founder Napheesa Collier recorded 19 points and 16 rebounds, while Allisha Gray contributed 19 points, including the decisive basket, helping the Lunar Owls secure a 67-57 victory over the Vinyl during the opening game on Monday.
In the second game, Kayla McBride scored 31 points, including the crucial game-winning shot, while Tiffany Hayes tallied 24 points, keeping the Laces unbeaten with a 71-62 triumph over the Rose.
McBride expressed her anticipation for the upcoming match against her Minnesota Lynx teammates—Collier and point guard Courtney Williams—on Friday night.
“There’s an interesting dynamic since two of my teammates play for that team. My other teammates aren’t with me right now. I’m excited for the matchup and hope we can keep building on our current success,” McBride shared after their win.
The Unrivaled league is still evolving as players and coaches become more accustomed to the fast-paced, full-court, 3-on-3 format.
McBride mentioned that she felt as if she played longer than the 19 minutes she spent on the court during Monday’s game, given the high-paced nature of the shortened court (72 feet compared to the standard 94 feet) and having two fewer players on each side.
“Removing just two players from the court causes everyone to be part of every single play,” Collier stated after her game. “That creates a significant difference.”
Although the Lunar Owls and Laces remain unbeaten, the Vinyl team, led by Rhyne Howard and Arike Ogunbowale, fell to 2-2 after losing both of their matches in Week 2.
The Phantom and the Rose achieved their first win Saturday night but sit at 1-3 overall. They will compete against one another in the initial game on Friday before the Lunar Owls and Laces face off.
The Mist, featuring Unrivaled co-founder Breanna Stewart, are still searching for their first win with an 0-4 record after two weeks.
