Mark Davis Optimistic About Tom Brady and Pete Carroll Leading the Raiders Forward

Raiders’ Mark Davis optimistic that Tom Brady and Pete Carroll can succeed Jon Gruden

In October 2024, Tom Brady officially received the green light to acquire a minority stake in the Las Vegas Raiders. The former NFL quarterback, now a broadcaster with Fox, navigated a lengthy approval procedure before gaining permission to join the Raiders.

During a press event on Tuesday, Raiders owner Mark Davis expressed his enthusiasm for Brady’s involvement with the team while introducing Pete Carroll and John Spytek as the new head coach and general manager, respectively.

“Adding Tom Brady means bringing someone on the football side to our organization—something that we’ve been missing,” Davis remarked to the press, according to ESPN.

He also elaborated that Brady is expected to fulfill the role that the Raiders envisioned for Jon Gruden when he was hired before the 2018 NFL season.

“He was a person I had high hopes for, someone who would stabilize the organization,” Davis said about Gruden. “He signed a 10-year contract, yet we found ourselves in a difficult position when he was released.”

Gruden coached the Raiders for parts of four seasons but resigned early in the 2021 NFL season after incriminating emails he sent during his ESPN tenure came to light. He has not returned to coaching in a full-time position since and is currently employed by Barstool Sports.

Since Gruden’s exit, the Raiders have hired three full-time head coaches and one interim coach, Rich Bisaccia, in 2021. Unfortunately, neither Josh McDaniels nor Antonio Pierce managed to stay for two complete seasons to revive the franchise.

Davis showed his confidence in Carroll, who will become the oldest head coach in NFL history as he leads the Raiders into their first game, to bring stability to the team alongside Spytek.

“We aim to create something significant here, and that’s been our focus from the start,” Davis stated. “Things shifted dramatically when Jon Gruden was let go, and we’ve been striving to get it right ever since. I have the patience needed for this process, and I believe we now have the right individuals. Ultimately, the results will be what matter most.”

Under Gruden’s leadership, the Raiders achieved a record of 22-31 over three-plus seasons, translating to a .415 winning percentage. Since then, the team’s performance has slightly declined to 25-38 (.397 winning percentage), and they lost their only playoff matchup in 2022 to the Cincinnati Bengals, ending 26-19.

In contrast, Carroll boasts an impressive career record of 170-120-1 and has secured a winning record in 11 of his last 12 seasons. Following a tough 4-13 season, Carroll will indeed face a challenge to uphold his successful track record with the Raiders.
