Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres expresses regret for blackface in old comedy skit
Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres has apologized for appearing in blackface during a comedy sketch from 17 years ago.
The star of “I’m Still Here,” 59, shared a statement with Deadline on Sunday, where she mentioned that “nearly two decades ago, I performed in blackface for a comedic segment on a Brazilian television program.” A representative for Torres verified this statement with YSL News the following day.
The revived sketch from the Brazilian show “Fantastico” showed Torres in blackface as she portrayed a housekeeper.
“I deeply regret this,” Torres expressed to Deadline. “I feel it’s essential to address this promptly to prevent any additional hurt and misunderstanding.”
“Back then, even as Black activism and advocacy were gaining momentum, the understanding of the racist implications of blackface had not yet become mainstream in Brazil. Today, due to enhanced cultural awareness and significant, albeit partial, progress in our society, it is undeniably clear that blackface is unacceptable everywhere.”
She added, “It’s crucial that we keep this conversation going to stop the normalization of racist behaviors, both past and present. As an artist and a global citizen, I am deeply committed to striving for the essential changes needed to foster a world free of inequality and racism.”
Torres is one of five best actress nominees for the 2025 Oscars, recognized for her role in “I’m Still Here,” which is also in the running for best picture. Many experts believe she has a strong chance of winning the Academy Award.
Earlier this month, at the Golden Globes, Torres achieved a surprising victory for best actress in a drama, making her the first Brazilian to receive this accolade. In 1999, her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, was nominated in the same category for “Central Station.”
Torres also marks the first Brazilian nominated for the best actress Oscar since her mother’s nomination in 1999, also for “Central Station.”
“Oh my, I didn’t prepare a speech, as I was already so happy,” Torres remarked during her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, adding, “Naturally, I want to dedicate this award to my mother.”
