Mike McCarthy will not coach in NFL in 2025, per reports

Only one head coaching position remains open in the NFL, and Mike McCarthy will not be stepping into that role.

McCarthy, who recently separated from the Dallas Cowboys two weeks ago, will sit out the 2025 NFL season and instead prepare for the 2026 hiring cycle, as reported by NFL Media and ESPN.

The New Orleans Saints are the only team still searching for a new head coach. On Tuesday, the Saints announced they had finished an in-person interview with Kellen Moore, the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator. Moore is in his first year with the Eagles after previously working with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023 and the Dallas Cowboys from 2019 to 2022. He spent three seasons under McCarthy in Dallas.

In 2019, McCarthy also took a year off from coaching after being dismissed by the Green Bay Packers in 2018. He joined the Cowboys in 2020, where he achieved a record of 49 wins and 35 losses. Overall, McCarthy has a coaching record of .608, totaling 174 wins, 112 losses, and 2 ties over 18 seasons. He successfully guided his teams to the playoffs in 12 of those seasons, notably three times with the Cowboys.
