Is Starbucks Reducing Its Menu? Coffee Chain Reveals Plans for ‘Optimization’
Starbucks is undergoing significant changes as it has recently shared that it will be streamlining its food and drink selections.
Brian Niccol, the newly appointed chairman and CEO, discussed the “fundamental change in strategy” during a Tuesday earnings call. He pointed out that some changes, like reintroducing the condiment bar and offering free refills for all customers, are part of efforts to bring the Seattle-based coffee giant back to its roots.
“Over the past four months, our attention has been on returning to the essence of Starbucks — a welcoming coffeehouse where customers gather to enjoy the finest coffee prepared by our expert baristas,” Niccol stated.
Niccol, who has committed to prioritizing the customer experience and increasing sales, indicated that the company is working on “simplifying” its menu. However, he did not disclose any specific food or drink items that might be removed. Additionally, Starbucks has eliminated the surcharge for non-dairy milk.
Here’s what to know about Starbucks’ recent changes, including when certain food and drink options may be removed from the menu.
When Will Starbucks Start Removing Items from Its Menu?
Starbucks plans to start “optimizing” its menu in the upcoming months, aiming for a 30% reduction in both food and beverage choices by the end of the 2025 fiscal year, which concludes on June 30, 2025.
“In refreshing our menu boards and enhancing cafe displays, we want to capture the coffeehouse vibe and better highlight our simplified offerings,” Niccol said.
Additional Changes at Starbucks
Since Niccol took over four months ago, several changes have been implemented, including a revision of the company’s open-door policy and the introduction of new coffeehouse features alongside the menu refresh.
Earlier this month, Starbucks revealed that customers now need to make a purchase to relax or use the restroom, a shift from a policy introduced in 2018. The new guidelines, which will be posted at U.S. locations, also prohibit discrimination or harassment, as well as the use of outside alcohol, smoking, vaping, drug consumption, and panhandling.
Additionally, just this week, Starbucks announced that a benefits program previously exclusive to Starbucks Rewards members will now be available to all customers dining in, and that the coffee condiment bars have returned and will be thoroughly stocked.
