D.L. Hughley expresses ‘disappointment’ over Snoop Dogg’s performance at Trump inauguration ball
Comedian D.L. Hughley has voiced his disappointment regarding Snoop Dogg’s performance at President Donald Trump’s inauguration event.
During a recent episode of his well-known podcast “The D.L. Hughley Show,” Hughley responded to comments made by the “Drop It Like It’s Hot” rapper, who previously addressed criticism concerning his performance. Snoop Dogg stated that “Black people are great at tearing each other down,” but Hughley believes fans aren’t coming from a place of hate.
“It’s not about anger or hate; it’s genuinely about disappointment,” he remarked on the Urban One podcast. “But why is it that every time someone finds themselves in a situation like this, we’re told we can’t support one another?”
He further elaborated, “The issue isn’t with ‘us’; it’s with you. The 2025 version of you conflicts with the 2017 version,” referring to Snoop’s earlier criticisms of Trump. “So it’s not about ‘us’ needing to get our act together; it’s you. It’s time for a chat with the person in the mirror.”
Hughley suggested that Snoop Dogg might be experiencing “inner conflict,” advising that “you should reflect inward and not look at the (Black) community.”
In a video shared on Instagram on Sunday, Snoop Dogg appeared to respond to those who criticized him for participating in the pro-Trump event.
“In response to all the negativity, I’m bringing love,” the rapper expressed. “You can’t hate enough for me, as I love too deeply.”
“We must learn to uplift each other rather than drag one another down,” Snoop Dogg added, reiterating that “Black people are great at tearing each other down.”
Snoop Dogg’s performance comes after his earlier criticism of Trump
Snoop Dogg performed at the Inaugural Crypto Ball in Washington, D.C., just three days before Trump was officially sworn in. The event aimed to celebrate “the 60th Presidential Inauguration, the first ‘crypto president’ of America, President-elect Donald J. Trump, along with his incoming cabinet and administration,” as stated on the event’s website. Although Trump did not attend, his crypto advisor David Sacks hosted the event.
Many fans were taken aback by Snoop Dogg’s participation, especially since in 2017 he claimed he would “roast” any artist performing at Trump’s inauguration. He had previously criticized the president and even portrayed shooting a clown resembling Trump in a music video that same year.
Additionally, Snoop Dogg stated in a 2020 interview with Real 92.3 that he would vote in that year’s presidential election “because I can’t stand to see this punk in office any longer.” However, it appears his view has shifted. In a 2024 interview with The Sunday Times, he remarked, “I have nothing but love and respect for Donald Trump.”
