Ke Huy Quan Celebrates 40 Years of Friendship with ‘The Goonies’: A Heartfelt Reunion

Ke Huy Quan reconnects with ‘The Goonies’ 40 years later: ‘Goonies never say die’

Goonies never say die.

On Monday, stars of “The Goonies,” including Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, and Kerri Green, gathered for Ke Huy Quan’s hand and footprint ceremony at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles.

Although Sean Astin was unable to attend, he joined Quan, Cohen, Green, and Feldman later for the premiere of their new film “Love Hurts.”

During his speech, Brolin, who portrayed Brand in the beloved 1985 film, expressed his deep admiration for Quan.

“You hold a special place in my heart, my friend. You have a magical touch because of your golden heart,” he stated.

Brolin continued, “I couldn’t be happier for you—everyone here, all us Goonies, shares in this joy. This honor is completely deserved and is a celebration of all that is good in this industry. Love you, buddy.”

He also read a letter from Steven Spielberg, who directed Quan in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and whose company, Amblin Entertainment, produced “The Goonies.” Spielberg, who was away on holiday, mentioned that Quan’s “entire life has been a fulfilled dream.”

“I’m proud of you for your incredible rise as a child and for your amazing return as an adult,” he said. “Very few get to enjoy that chance twice.”

After gaining fame as a child star, Quan took a 20-year break from acting, as roles became hard to come by, and he transitioned into stunt coordination and assistant directing. He made a remarkable return in 2022 with his role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which won him an Oscar for best supporting actor and also took home the best picture award.

Since then, Quan has continued to act, appearing in “Loki,” “Kung Fu Panda 4,” and has upcoming roles in “The Electric State” and “Zootopia 2.” He is now starring as the lead in the new action-comedy “Love Hurts.”

During his speech, Quan became emotional as he reflected on his childhood dream of one day leaving his hand and footprints at the Chinese Theatre after witnessing Spielberg and George Lucas do so.

“At 13, this felt like such a far-fetched dream, and over time, I realized how naïve I was,” he commented. “As the years went by, I would see the theater and be reminded of how that once-hopeful actor became just another audience member. Now, more than 40 years later, I’m acting again, and that wild dream has become a reality.”

He expressed that “The Goonies” remains “one of the best adventures of my life” and thanked his co-stars for their support. Chris Columbus, the screenwriter of “The Goonies,” also attended the ceremony, praising Quan as “my fellow Goonie.”

“You have repeatedly shown yourself to be a person of great integrity and courage, achieving your dreams against all odds,” he remarked, going on to declare Quan’s story as “one of the greatest comebacks in cinematic history.”

Columbus added, “You are the very essence of a phrase I penned years ago: Goonies never say die.”

Daniel Scheinert, director of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” who was accompanied by his co-director Daniel Kwan, shared how inspiring it has been to witness Quan’s return to acting.

“It’s beautiful to see because so many people are growing older and feel they shouldn’t share their art anymore,” he noted. “You’ve shown the world that there’s still so much more for you to give.”

Overwhelmed, Quan expressed his gratitude to Scheinert and Kwan, saying, “Thank you so much for bringing me back.”
