Devin Booker Becomes All-Time Leading Scorer for Suns in Overtime Loss: Stats and History
At just 28 years old, Devin Booker has made a significant mark by becoming the all-time leading scorer of the Phoenix Suns during Monday night’s overtime defeat against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Booker reached this milestone in the third quarter when he made a three-pointer, surpassing Walter Davis on the franchise’s scoring list.
He finished the game with 34 points, the highest for either team. Unfortunately, this outstanding effort wasn’t enough to secure a victory for Phoenix. The Trail Blazers dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Suns 37-25, which ultimately led the game into overtime where Portland clinched the win.
With this achievement, Booker now has a total of 15,678 career points, all with the Phoenix Suns, surpassing Davis by 12 points and leading Alvan Adams by 1,768 points. Here’s a look at the highlights of Booker’s record-setting journey.
Devin Booker’s Career Overview:
Booker entered the NBA as the 13th overall pick in the 2015 draft. His rookie season was relatively quiet, averaging 13.8 points per game, which stands out as the least productive period of his career. He has since averaged over 20 points in every consecutive season.
Although he finished fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting, he quickly gained recognition for his All-Star capabilities starting in his second season. However, it wasn’t until his fifth season (2019-2020) that he received his first All-Star selection. This marked the beginning of three consecutive All-Star appearances, the last being during the 2021-2022 season where he finished fourth in MVP voting while helping the Suns secure the league’s best record. Sadly, they were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by the Dallas Mavericks.
Devin Booker’s All-Time Scoring Ranking:
Even though he holds the Suns’ scoring record, Booker ranks lower among the NBA’s all-time scorers. His total of 15,678 points places him 134th in NBA history and 20th among active players, trailing behind stars like Klay Thompson, Brook Lopez, Mike Conley, and Jrue Holiday. However, his youth provides him with the opportunity to escalate up the leaderboard in the future.
In comparison, the Suns’ franchise record is positioned at the lower end among NBA teams. Only eight teams, including the Nets, Pelicans, Magic, Grizzlies, Hornets, Clippers, Raptors, and Wizards, have lower total points for their franchise leader. The Nets have the lowest scoring leader, Brook Lopez, with 10,444 points. Booker still trails behind the nearest franchise leader by over 3,000 points (Isiah Thomas, Detroit Pistons – 18,822).
Upcoming Games for the Suns:
The Suns are scheduled to play their next game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 9:30 p.m. ET.
Currently, the Suns are tied for 10th place in the Western Conference alongside the Golden State Warriors, with both teams holding a record of 25-24.
