The Shamrock Shake returns, accompanied by an old McDonald’s character: What you need to know
Top of the morning to you! Shamrock Shake season is just around the corner.
The Shamrock Shake is a delightful milkshake that combines vanilla soft-serve ice cream with minty green syrup and whipped cream. It will be back at McDonald’s starting Monday, February 10.
Also returning to the menu is the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry, which features vanilla soft-serve, the signature minty syrup, and crunchy Oreo cookie pieces. As in previous years, McDonald’s will donate 25 cents from every Shamrock Shake sold until March 23 to support the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
In addition to the beloved shake, Uncle O’Grimacey, the Irish uncle of Grimace, is also making a comeback after being away for many years. If Uncle O’Grimacey is a new name to you, you’re not alone; he hasn’t been around for quite a while.
Here’s what you should know about the Shamrock Shake season and Uncle O’Grimacey’s return.
Who is Uncle O’Grimacey?
Uncle O’Grimacey made his first appearance in 1975, just five years after the Shamrock Shake was introduced. He resembles Grimace, featuring a round body, short limbs, and an all-green appearance, complete with a little hat, a vest adorned with shamrocks, and a walking stick.
In his debut commercial, Grimace expresses his worry to Ronald McDonald that he lacks a gift for Uncle O’Grimacey, who is visiting from Sham Rock, Ireland. Ronald comes to the rescue by suggesting the Shamrock Shake as a perfect gift.
Although Uncle O’Grimacey was featured in various ads and promotions for a number of years, he eventually joined the ranks of other retired McDonald’s characters like Mayor McCheese, Birdie the Early Bird, and Captain Crook.
Are you hesitant to pay $299 for a vintage Uncle O’Grimacey statue from eBay? No worries! To celebrate his return, McDonald’s will be offering limited-edition Uncle O’Grimacey t-shirts, baseball caps, and crewneck sweatshirts exclusively on the McDonald’s Unlimited website.
For every Uncle O’Grimacey merchandise purchase, McDonald’s will also contribute to Ronald McDonald House Charities, although the exact donation amount has not been specified.
What are the calorie counts for the Shamrock Shake?
According to McDonald’s, a medium Shamrock Shake has 540 calories. For reference, a medium vanilla shake contains 570 calories, while a medium chocolate shake has 650 calories.
The Oreo Shamrock McFlurry, in its regular size, contains 460 calories as stated by McDonald’s.
