Vanessa Kirby, beloved for her roles in ‘Mission Impossible’ and ‘The Crown,’ steps into the MCU with ‘Fantastic Four’
Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby, acclaimed for her roles in Netflix’s “The Crown” and the “Mission: Impossible” and “Fast & Furious” series, has officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Sue Storm in “Fantastic Four: First Steps.”
Fans eagerly awaited the recently unveiled trailer, which offers a glimpse of Marvel’s “first family,” introduced to audiences in the 1960s comics. Joining Kirby are Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm (the Thing), and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm (the Human Torch).
Kirby steps into the shoes of previous actresses Jessica Alba, who played Sue in the 2005 and 2007 films, and Kate Mara, who portrayed her in the poorly received 2015 version featuring Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan.

What is ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ about?
“First Steps” narrates the adventures of the Fantastic Four, a group of astronauts who gain incredible powers from cosmic radiation.
In the trailer, Sue declares, “Whatever life throws at us, we’ll face it together. As a family.” This provides a sneak peek at the team’s thrilling journey, which introduces the helpful robot H.E.R.B.I.E., the sleek Fantasticar, and the enormous, planet-eating villain Galactus (voiced by Ralph Ineson), who targets New York City.
In this installment, Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing “confront their greatest challenge yet,” as noted in the synopsis by Marvel Studios.
“They must juggle their superhero duties with the strength of their family ties while defending Earth from a devouring cosmic entity known as Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his mysterious Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner),” the synopsis elaborates. “Things take a personal turn as Galactus’ plan to consume the planet intensifies.”
As fans expected, the film is “set against the vibrant backdrop of a retro-futuristic world inspired by the 1960s.”
What movies and shows has Vanessa Kirby starred in?
Vanessa Kirby gained recognition for her role as Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth’s sister, in the first two seasons of the award-winning series “The Crown.” This led her to participate in significant franchises and critically acclaimed films, earning her an Oscar nomination for best actress for her performance in “Pieces of a Woman.”
In the 2020 film, she portrays Martha, a woman whose home birth ends tragically, resulting in an exploration of grief alongside her husband, played by Shia LaBeouf. The film opens with an intense, 24-minute birthing scene that triggered similar feelings of anxiety for Kirby, reminiscent of her portrayal of Princess Margaret, as she revealed to YSL News in 2021.
“The level of fear was just as immense for those two roles,” she admitted, explaining her intense worries about embodying the royal character. “I felt overwhelmed, so I had to focus on just putting one foot in front of the other… I experienced the same with Martha.”
Kirby made her debut as Alanna Mitsopolis, also known as the arms dealer White Widow, in 2018’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” starring alongside Tom Cruise. She reprised her role in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” and is set to return in “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” arriving in theaters on May 23.
Which Marvel movies will Vanessa Kirby appear in?
According to IMDB, Kirby is slated to bring back her role as Sue Storm in the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday” next year and in “Avengers: Secret Wars,” set for release in 2027. Both films will feature Robert Downey Jr. in his first role after Iron Man, portraying the Fantastic Four’s adversary, Doctor Doom.
These future “Avengers” films, produced by Joe and Anthony Russo, will follow “The Fantastic Four” as part of “phase six” of the MCU.
Kirby expressed her excitement, stating, “It’s incredible to read the comics from the ’60s and see how this family has connected with audiences for so long. I’m truly honored to become a part of it,” during Marvel’s showcase at last summer’s San Diego Comic-Con.
