Myles Garrett Reveals Trade Request Stemmed from Cleveland Browns’ Instability

Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett Shares that Team’s ‘Instability’ Prompted Trade Request

NEW ORLEANS — Myles Garrett, defensive end for the Cleveland Browns, revealed that his choice to seek a trade stemmed from the difficulties faced throughout the last season.

“It was more about the ongoing issues we had leading up to the end of the season along with how everything unfolded,” Garrett shared with YSL News Sports while at Radio Row in New Orleans on Wednesday, just two days after officially announcing his trade request from the team that selected him first overall in 2017.

Cleveland concluded the season with a disappointing 3-14 record during Garrett’s eighth year, representing the team’s worst outcome since their infamous winless 0-16 season in his rookie year.

“I needed to take some time to relax, unwind, and reflect with my family while stepping back from the last game,” Garrett stated. “After discussions with them and feeling the same way about the team’s direction, along with conversations with management about our future and playoff aspirations, I recognized that a change was necessary.”

During his time with the Browns, which has spanned eight years, Garrett has achieved six Pro Bowl selections, four All-Pro honors, and earned the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year award. However, he has only participated in the playoffs twice, with the last appearance being during the 2023 season.

“I haven’t reached the level of success I desire,” he added.

Garrett expressed his desire to join a team that offers him the “chance to win and compete” immediately. When asked if he had specific teams in mind, Garrett mentioned he is considering “multiple contenders.”

“I just want to have the chance to make a significant impact on one of those teams and help them succeed while being a strong teammate and leader,” Garrett expressed. “I aim to reach the playoffs and have a shot at the Super Bowl. I want to showcase my skills and bring home a trophy to a city.”

In his statement about the trade request made on Monday, Garrett noted, “The objective was never just to transition from Cleveland to Canton; it’s always been about competing for and winning a Super Bowl.”
