Who Could Be on the US Olympic Men’s Hockey Team for 2026? A Look Ahead
So far, the only confirmed individuals for the 2026 U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team are general manager Bill Guerin and head coach Mike Sullivan.
However, the U.S. lineup for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off could provide insight into the NHL’s first Olympic participation since the 2014 Sochi Games.
The tournament, featuring teams from the United States, Canada, Finland, and Sweden, will take place from February 12-20 in Montreal and Boston. A successful performance by Team USA could offer clues about the potential roster for next year’s Olympics. Ultimately, selections will heavily depend on the performance of U.S. players as the 2025-26 season unfolds.
Here’s the U.S. roster for the 4 Nations Face-Off (listed alphabetically) along with potential candidates for the 2026 Olympic team:
Forwards
- Matt Boldy, Minnesota Wild
- Kyle Connor, Winnipeg Jets
- Jack Eichel, Vegas Golden Knights
- Jake Guentzel, Tampa Bay Lightning
- Jack Hughes, New Jersey Devils
- Chris Kreider, New York Rangers
- Dylan Larkin, Detroit Red Wings
- Auston Matthews, Toronto Maple Leafs
- J.T. Miller, New York Rangers
- Brock Nelson, New York Islanders
- Brady Tkachuk, Ottawa Senators
- Matthew Tkachuk, Florida Panthers
- Vincent Trocheck, New York Rangers
Most of these forwards could return for the Olympics. Key players include Matthews, Hughes, the Tkachuk siblings, and Connor, with Boldy emerging as a rising talent. The main consideration is for Kreider, Trocheck, and Nelson, all in their thirties. Miller is older too but appears likely to remain in the lineup.
The U.S. boasts a wealth of talent. Clayton Keller from Utah is off to a strong start this season. Jason Robertson from Dallas was omitted this year due to his poor early performance, although he has previously reached the 40-goal mark twice. Other candidates to watch include Cole Caufield from Montreal, Logan Cooley from Utah, and Buffalo’s Tage Thompson and Alex Tuch.
Defensemen
- D Brock Faber, Minnesota Wild
- D Adam Fox, New York Rangers
- D Noah Hanifin, Vegas Golden Knights
- D Quinn Hughes, Vancouver Canucks
- D Charlie McAvoy, Boston Bruins
- D Jaccob Slavin, Carolina Hurricanes
- D Zach Werenski, Columbus Blue Jackets
This defensive lineup is expected to be one of the strongest in the 4 Nations tournament. Still, there are other contenders for the Olympic spot. Lane Hutson from Montreal is a top candidate for rookie of the year. Jake Sanderson from Ottawa, Neal Pionk from Winnipeg, Luke Hughes from New Jersey, and others could also be considered. If Luke Hughes is selected, it would mark the inclusion of all three Hughes siblings at the Olympics.
Goaltenders
- Connor Hellebuyck, Winnipeg Jets
- Jake Oettinger, Dallas Stars
- Jeremy Swayman, Boston Bruins
The goaltending lineup for 2026 appears to be set with Hellebuyck, a two-time Vezina Trophy winner, alongside Oettinger and Swayman, both of whom have impressive records. Thatcher Demko from Vancouver would typically be a contender for the 4 Nations, but he is currently sidelined with an injury. Should he resume the season strongly, he could re-enter the conversation.
Other U.S. goalies to keep an eye on include Calgary’s Dustin Wolf, a rookie of the year hopeful, and Seattle’s Joey Daccord.
