Meet Bakso, the Adorable New Tiger Cub at Disney’s Animal Kingdom
A grrreat new friend is warming hearts at Walt Disney World.
Bakso, a charming 5-month-old Sumatran tiger cub, is now on display for guests at Animal Kingdom.
He is the first tiger cub born in the park in the last seven years; the previous births were twins Anala and Jeda in 2017. Those two have since been moved to the San Antonio Zoo in Texas as part of a Species Survival Plan.
Where is Animal Kingdom Found?
Animal Kingdom is situated in Central Florida’s Lake Buena Vista, just outside of Orlando.
Is Animal Kingdom an Accredited Zoo?
Disney’s Animal Kingdom, along with The Seas at EPCOT, is accredited by the prestigious Association of Zoos & Aquariums. This organization ensures high standards in animal care and management. The AZA is focused on enhancing the role of zoos and aquariums in conservation, education, and research.
What Type of Tigers Can You Find at Animal Kingdom?
Animal Kingdom is home to several Sumatran tigers, one of the world’s most endangered species. They originate from the Indonesian island of Sumatra, specifically its forests and wetlands.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare reports that there are fewer than 600 Sumatran tigers remaining globally. Their endangered status results from poaching and loss of habitat.
Although classified as “big cats,” Sumatran tigers are smaller than other tiger species, according to the International Tiger Project. Their fur is darker orange with closely spaced stripes, which helps them remain concealed in their tropical rainforest surroundings.
Disney emphasizes the importance of the Tigers’ dwindling numbers, stating its commitment to wildlife conservation through its nonprofit “Disney Conservation Fund.”
When Was Bakso Born?
Bakso was born on September 26, 2024, to parents Sohni and Conrad, who also live at Animal Kingdom. Disney officials described his birth as a significant event for both the park and the conservation of Sumatran tigers.
“Bakso represents hope for the future of his species and embodies crucial collaborative efforts with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Species Survival Plan to ensure the preservation and recovery of endangered species in managed care worldwide,” Disney stated.
What Does His Name Signify?
“Bakso” translates to “meatball” in Indonesian.
Where Are the Tigers Located in Animal Kingdom?
Bakso and his family of tigers can be spotted at the Maharajah Jungle Trek in the park’s Asia section.
