Exciting SEC Showdown: Florida vs. Auburn Among Must-Watch College Basketball Games This Weekend

At Starting Five HQ, we acknowledge there’s a significant event happening this weekend that’s captivating the sports community. However, there are numerous collegiate basketball games worth your attention leading up to Sunday’s festivities.

Our countdown of the top five men’s college basketball matchups kicks off on Friday night. Following that, several marquee games across the four major conferences will take place on a busy Saturday, ensuring you won’t be bored until the big event in New Orleans on Sunday. Enjoy!

No. 6 Florida at No. 1 Auburn

Time/TV: Saturday, 4 p.m. ET, ESPN

We start with the SEC’s game of the week, which promises to deliver another top-10 clash in what has turned out to be a deeply competitive conference. The Tigers could tolerate a couple of losses in the coming weeks and still maintain a strong position in the NCAA tournament picture. However, their unbeaten record is significant, making them a favorite to clinch a championship even if they stumble later. But we must focus on the immediate challenge ahead. The Gators, who are also in contention for a high seed, aim to enhance their resume with a win at the top-ranked opponent. Florida will look to bring back Walter Clayton Jr. after he missed the last game due to an ankle injury. That said, managing Auburn’s intense ball pressure, which results in an average of 7.5 steals per game, is critical for the Gators. On the other hand, Johni Broome, Auburn’s standout center, is back to scoring double-doubles after missing time. Florida’s Alex Condon will try to contain him around the basket.

No. 10 St. John’s at No. 18 Connecticut

Time/TV: Friday, 8 p.m. ET, Fox

Next, we shift to the Big East for the Friday night highlight as the formidable Red Storm put their nine-game winning streak on the line against the two-time defending NCAA champs, UConn, who are aiming for a strong finish. The Huskies are looking to welcome back impressive freshman Liam McNeeley, although it’s uncertain how effective he’ll be against a tough team like St. John’s after an eight-game hiatus. The Red Storm have surged to the top of the conference thanks to their strong defense, holding teams below 40% shooting, and dominating the boards, led by Zuby Ejiofor, even if their own shooting isn’t stellar.

No. 2 Duke at No. 21 Clemson

Time/TV: Saturday, 6 p.m. ET, ESPN

The Blue Devils travel to Littlejohn Coliseum in what could be their final test in the ACC before a potential perfect conference record. Clemson is looking for a boost at home to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Georgia Tech earlier this week. While standout Cooper Flagg has received much of the spotlight for Duke, the roles of fellow freshmen Kon Knueppel and Khaman Maluach are equally crucial. Clemson will need Chase Hunter to have a productive shooting day if they are to keep up with the Blue Devils.

No. 12 Texas Tech at No. 20 Arizona

Time/TV: Saturday, 10 p.m. ET, ESPN

Don’t miss this nightcap featuring two of the top teams in the Big 12 as the Red Raiders, who have captured seven straight wins, face off against the Wildcats at McKale Center. After an impressive win at Houston, Texas Tech continued their momentum with a strong showing against Baylor. Arizona, however, has rebounded with five straight victories since their earlier defeat to the Red Raiders in Lubbock. In that previous matchup, JT Toppin had a significant impact, but Caleb Love’s shooting prowess can quickly change the outlook for the Wildcats.

Oregon at No. 9 Michigan State

Time/TV: Saturday, noon ET, Fox

The dynamics in the Big Ten have shifted in 2025. Unfortunately, the Ducks are struggling with a four-game losing streak, which isn’t ideal as they make their first visit to the Breslin Center as new conference members. The Spartans, eager to bounce back after two losses during their Los Angeles road trip, are well-prepared for this matchup. Oregon was competitive in their last game against Michigan, but they will be looking to get Nate Bittle more close-in scoring opportunities this time around. Michigan State boasts depth in their bench, but when the game is on the line, the ball often finds Jaden Akins.
