Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy sidelined for entire rookie season after knee surgery

J.J. McCarthy’s debut NFL season has come to an abrupt end before he even had the chance to get started.

The Minnesota Vikings quarterback is set to miss the entire 2024 season following a complete meniscus surgery performed on Wednesday, as confirmed by head coach Kevin O’Connell.

McCarthy, selected as the No. 10 overall pick in the NFL draft this past April after guiding Michigan to a national championship, did not participate in practice on Monday after playing in the preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday.

On Tuesday, O’Connell indicated that McCarthy would require surgery, but it remained uncertain until the operation whether it would involve a complete repair or just a trim, which would have potentially allowed for a return this season.

With McCarthy sidelined, veteran quarterback Sam Darnold, who joined the Vikings on a one-year deal this offseason, is now clearly the starting quarterback without any competition.

McCarthy took to Twitter on Tuesday to reassure fans, stating he would be “back in no time.”
